Ok, so the MS defragger is causing me major problems at the moment, and only gets to about 5% before stopping and saying some files cannot be defragged Any other apps that anyone can recommend? would prefer a free one or 30day trial DD
Dont have an exact preference but Have you tried Defragging in Safe mode. EDIT:http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.asp try that out.
What version of Windows are you running? More than likely you have some bad sectors. There are various commands you can use in Command Prompt to work around this issue without having to resort to a "3rd party defragger."
Did any of you tested Defraggler? It's from the same guys that make Ccleaner http://www.defraggler.com/
Tried diskeeper before, and im not a fan, but did give it a go earlier and still not a fan! Just trying the one by johnny, so far im impressed, specially as it can defrag individual files (have a couple of hd movie rips that are 8gb a file and were fragged into over 2000 parts) its upto 15% done at the moment @ Alien workshop, no bad sectors on the drive, as done a full scan on it, im using XP and its formatted to ntfs, its primarily used simply for storage of movies and music for streaming over my network, so it does have a lot of heavy use which is why i think the MS defragger is struggling so much, and also tried it in safemore
Did you run the defragger from Command Prompt while in safe mode? It's better to run it from Command Prompt than us the GUI app.
I'd recommend JkDefrag too. I use a scheduled task to run it when the PC is idle (and to stop when it is no longer idle), which works quite well. However, all Windows defragmenters AFAIK (even the likes of Diskeeper) use the same Windows API stuff for doing the actual defragmentation work as I don't think any other software is allowed to access the hard disk on such a low level, so outside of how the defrag software sorts the files after defragging there's not an awful lot of difference between them. Two reasons that will stop the defragmenter like in your OP could be if you have bad sectors like Alien Workshop said or if there's not enough free space to defrag whatever files it's trying to work on.
