I am in the market for a decent but not to overly expensive EPROM/ EEPROM reader/writer.
I need to write various firmware revisions to a few different chips, however, I have never needed to do this before. I know I have seen a few models discussed on these forums before, but I cannot seem to find them through the search. Can any of you higher beings of the electronics realm help me out.

I'll try to provide more info if its' necessary.

Doesn't look like the TL866 supports the 27C322 which is one you'll want if working with CPS2/NeoGeo era arcade stuff, or some of the Genesis conversions. Not sure about SNES stuff.

I will be mostly dabbling with 27CXXX and 24CXX series PROMs as far as I understand, although some flexibility would be nice. Is the TL866CS pretty much the same thing as the TL866?

TL866A has icsp, TL866CS doesn't and is the cheaper version.

You need to know what chips though, as mentioned above the 27c322 isn't supported and that fits in the family you mentioned

With eprom burners you really get what you pay for.
In my opinion you can either get a:

    - TL866CS for ~$40 shipped, really good 40pin programmer but does not support the bigger eproms like the 42pin 27c322
    - GQ-4X for ~$100 supports a few more chips through adapters you have to buy extra
    - or buy a higher end model like the top3100 (or similar) for around $200

So you have to decide if you want to spend 2-3 times the money just for a few more supported eproms. It really depends on which chips you need to program.
You should make a list of all the eproms you need to program and compare what programer supports them all and what adapter you might need to buy.

I agree, the TL866 is very good for what it costs.

You could buy the TL866, any eproms that dont work - I could sell preprogrammed at a reasonable price.

Or you could go for something more expensive, as mentioned above.

If I had the extra cash I probably would go for the GQ-4X just because it is well known and there are lots of adapters and a big community. With a few adapters you probably end up spending around $200.
But the TL866 is just so cheap that it's hard to resist buying it.

I used to have a gq-4x before I upgraded. Worked OK for me, probably spent around $400 with all the adapters I bought

Bad_Ad84 what did you upgrade to? I didn't see it mentioned above. I'll take the suggestions and create a list of just what chips I need to program for the time being.

Wow that's probably a lot more than I will be needing, but I appreciate being able to see the range from cheap to professional grade.

I went ahead and ordered the gq-4x. I think for now it will be able to handle everything that I need. Thanks for all the help guys. I really appreciate it.
