Hi all, I'm newly registered here so be gentle. I have been lurking for a while though, and I love (and share) the passion I see here for quality games, retro hardware and impressive collections. Anyway, onwards with my question- What books do you own or recommend regarding gaming? I'm looking for more, I have browsed through Amazon and the likes and it leaves me wondering if there are many more books that anyone considers worthwhile. I own.. Kent's "Ultimate History of Video Games" (A fantastic read) Sheff's "Game Over" (Good, but I question the accuracy) 'I AM 8-BIT' (Collection of impressive artwork) "Classic 80s Home Video Games" (I love it just as an archive of the artwork and style from those days) Gameplan's "Encyclopedia of consoles, home computers, and handhelds" (Can't wait for the next volume, on joysticks, to be translated into English and released!) "Digital Retro" (Photographs of retro computers. I love the designs.) That's enough of me waffling, it's over to you. Cheers!
There's a book about iD, Doom, Romero that's FANTASTIC !!! Power-Up: How Japanese Video Games Gave the World an Extra Life by Chris Kohler.
I prefer the gaming catalogue books myself - Sega Consumer History, Mega Drive Encyclopedia and the Playstation ones. There's some Nintendo ones that look good too, but I always forget to buy them :/ I'm mostly ignorant about the type listed here; which ones don't read like an extended magazine article?
The Sega Consumer History seems really cool- luckily theres actually a copy on eBay at the moment. I've come across the Mega Drive Encyclopedia before, seems really hard to actually get a hold of. I don't think any of the books I listed actually read at all like an extended magazine article. I mean, Ultimate History is like a textbook it's so big. It's quite heavy on the Atari years (by no means a bad thing) and it does just seems to skim over some large things- still a great read.
