Seeing that Worst Game topic pop up made me curious what PS1 games they would recommend. PS1 had a very large library of games and during its day I only played a small slice of those. So what games are in your opinions the greatest gems, as well as just good solid games to play. They can be games that were also on PC or Saturn or whatever. It would be nice to hear about a variety of games. Shooters, Platformers, Racers, etc. Japan or PAL only games are welcome too. To start us out here are some games I think are great PS1 games. Descent - It's a cool first person shooter where you fly a ship through space mines and kill everything. Despite PC gamers complaining and saying the PC version is better, the PS1 version is a fun play. And easier than getting a DOS platform together to play the PC Descent. King of Fighters 98' - Either my favorite or second favorite KoF game and it's a pretty decent port. Just annoying loading time to deal with. Mega Man 8 - Solid Mega Man action. Not much else to say. Mega Man X4 - Superb Mega Man X, my favorite one perhaps. Street Fighter Collection - SSF2 and SFA2 Gold, can't go wrong with that. That's all I'll mention for now. Feel free to second anyone's choice if you find any particular game deserving of it.
Star Ocean 2 (even though I never made any substantial progress) Bushido Blade Final Fantasy VII - it's been said, and I normally go against the grain, but I still think it's a fantastic game Spiderman - if I had to be a superhero, it would be Spiderman, so maybe I'm a little biased I'm sure there's more. The PSX is one of my favorite systems.
Ore no Ryouri. Its a Japan only PSX game that only works with a dual analog controller. In the game you are a chef that has to work from restaurant to restaurant. You use the analog sticks to Chop Vegetables, Pour Beer, Wash Dishes, Pour Soup Broth, Fry Burgers, Call The Police, Stop On Roaches, Hand Money Back To Angry Customers, and a ton more. If you have time, read this review on it. http://users.pandora.be/twin-dreams/PSone/Ore_No_Ryouri.html Its my favorite PS1 game to ever exist. Mainly because I love cooking probably.
I've gone through my back issues of EDGE magazine and compiled a list of all the PS1 games that scored over 8/10. I've added some that are obscure (not necessarily good) to the list as well, and removed the ones I already have, so it's not necessarily complete, but these are the games that I'm going to looking for as time goes by: Resident Evil 2 Xenogears Grand Theft Auto Collection TOCA2: Touring Cars Tomb Raider 3 Forsaken Circuit Breakers Xi International Track and Field Final Fantasy Tactics Panzer Front bis PaRappa the Rapper Vib Ribbon Colin McRae Rally 2.0 Devil Dice Tekken 3 Alien Resurrection Turok: Dinosaur Hunter Final Fantasy VIII Rakugaki Showtime Silhouette Mirage Legion of Heros Brave Fencer Musashiden Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee Bloody Roar Bushido Blade 2 Circuit Breakers Destruction Derby 2 Dino Crisis Einhander F1 '97 G-Police Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Loaded MDK Mechwarrior 2 Micro Machines v3 Mr Driller Rollcage Stage 2 Soul Edge Tobal No.2 Toshinden Total NBA '97 Tunnel B1 Vandal Hearts 2 Wild Arms Chrono Cross Street Fighter Alpha 3 Fear Effect Tomba (1 or 2) Is: Internal Section Harmful Park Team Buddies Zanac X Zanac Dave.
valkyrie profile, final fantasy tactics, legend of mana, saga frontier, granturismo 2, wipeout 3 (special edition would be better) are just MUST have. many other nice ones too are around, i just can't think of them
Vib ribbon - I love how you can use your own audio cd's and play the game Lunar SSSC Lunar 2 EBC Legend of Dragoon - I know there are mixed feelings about this, but this game was amazing to me. I don't know if it was the graphics/presentation/story/gameplay/or just the period in my life that I played this that rekindles memories...I loved this DDR 5th Mix DDR Extra Mix G Darius Gekioh Shooting King (Shienryu) - not the best, but good fun and CHEAP
Parappa / Lammy Tomba 1 Tenchu 1 / 2 BOF III Tales of Destiny 1 MGS Guilty Gear Any Japanese food game (inc. Burger Burger) Strider 2 Any Namco shooting game Some Xing games (Gussun Oyoyo, Umihara kawase) I.Q. Xai / Devil Dice Lomax (for visuals only)
Star Ocean 2 / FF7 / Xenogears / Tales of Destiny are really great RPGs Vandal Hearts is probably one of my favorite SRPGs on the system, but damn hard in the later levels. No matter how hard I tried I've never got through a certain stage :crying: Fluid is nice I think, but not really a game.. being a hobby musician I like to play around with it One of my fave Shmups might be Soukyu Gurentai, but the Saturn Version is superior since that one does not have slowdowns.. the PSX Version adds some FMV and Speech to it. well there's much more..
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Akumajo Dracula X...) - needless to say Aconcagua - obscure point-'n-click adventure (3D) taking place in a fictive state in South America, Japan only release and text-heavy (a few parts in Spanish!)
disruptor - a proper FPS, incorporated psionics long before bioshock :katamari: blood omen - adult zelda with vampires, ace stuff! agent armstrong - excellent 2D platform run'n'gun, a real gem! crusader no remorse - isometric action like never before/since, quirky controls at first but the game is brilliant so youll learn to live with em. wing commander (4 is it?) - dull and easy gameplay sections but hilarious story which allows for the most outrageous plottwists (player controlled). broken sword - ace point n click that not even SCUMM could have outdone. broken helix - very different 3D adventure/platformer, bruce campbell is the hero and everything happens in realtime which means its very easy to get fooked (especially if you save at the wrong time), hard and very good!
A little known game... Board Game: Top Shop Fun as heck, a little bit like monolpoly.. but with stores in various shopping malls... fun game for multiplayer!!!
Some of my favourite games are Disruptor (nice FPS and first game from Insomniac!), Lifeforce Tenka (another fun FPS), Porsche Challenge, the first Colin McRae Rally, Kula World (platform/puzzle), Overboard or the Pandemonium games.
I really appreciate the suggestions. I plan to look into alot of these games. I've built up a pretty good list so far of games to try out. It's somewhere over 200 titles. Some more games I'd recommend to anyone for PSX: Bust-A-Move 2: Arcade Edition / Puzzle Bobble 2 Bust-A-Move 99' / Puzzle Bobble 3 Bust-A-Move 4 / Puzzle Bobble 4 Sweet, Simple, very fun Puzzle game series. Captain Commando - Very nice port of a fun CPS1 beat em up. Supposively it even supports 4 players at once. I haven't tried it as I don't have a multitap or 4 PS controllers. But I imagine it would kick ass. Japan only release though. =( Castlevania Chronicles - No description needed. Gokujou Parodius Da! Deluxe Pack - It's Parodius, not much else needs to be said. Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen & Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Both are nice games with a good story and can be obtained cheap. Soul Reaver you can get brand new sealed for 6 bucks. The Raiden Project - Mmmm Raiden goodness. One of my favorite shooters. Rampage: World Tour - Smashy Smashy. If you like things to be smashed and carnage in general it's a classic. Keep 'em coming. I'm sure there are alot more games to hear about.
