I finally managed to run PC-Engine emulator for CD games on my PC so I would like to hear some recommendations for good PC-Engine games expect from rpg (or any other games which need to know japanese) and games like Bonk and Lord of Thunders which are available for Virtual Console on Wii. Wacky and cute games are more appreciated.
For the shooters, there's a bunch but the must-haves to my mind are R-type, Super Star Soldier, Parodius, and Gunhead. You've already mentioned Bonk. All three are good, 3 is particularly impressive graphically. Beball is a hidden gem. Devil Crash, even if you don't like vpin. None of these are CD games, mind. Tatsujin, over to you
Don't throw out the RPG genre on the PC Engine. When I started playing PCE games, I couldn't understand Japanese, but I had a blast with the Y's series and Xanadu II. Also Last Armageddon is an insane blast. But for you're looking more at action... the staple on the system is Dracula X. Bomberman '94 is actually my favorite game of all time... I love the single player mode. If you're into toilet humor there's Kato & Ken. Lots of great shooters on the system as well. For a cute game, try Virgin Dream. It's a raising sim, and if you do good each particular day, you get to see a girl in the shower. Princess Maker is also cute, but both of those require knowledge of Japanese. You could play the Valis series. There's lots of stuff out there; but one thing you should totally do is get an actual PC Engine to play these games on. It's the difference between driving a car in Gran Turismo, and actually owning the car. http://www.pcengine.co.uk/ There's a great resource for discovering PCE games.
Somer Assault Gomola Speed Dungeon Explorer Soldier Blade After Burner II Hani in the Sky Alien Crush Neutopia Neutopia II Shinobi KiKi KaiKai Splatterhouse Bomberman '94 Adventure Island Gradius Raiden Street Fighter II Some others I can't think of right now, but these are my favorites.
I'll probably get laughed off the boards for this, but I absolutely adore Skweek. It's just another 'Painter' type game but it's got that one more go feel, tight controls and a cracking soundtrack
kind of off-topic but here goes: anyone know if I can run/emulate PCE CD games directly from the original CD or does it only work with images? I have a couple of PCE CD games I bought in a bundle but I have no PCE yet and I would love to try these games.
Magic Engine will load and run the original game CDs - requires using a suitable system card rom of course. not sure about the other emulators on PC out there though.. MednafenX-PCE on XBox1 will load ISO/WAV dumps once you've extracted the track data and FTP'd them to the console.. hth
Maybe it sounds like a noob's question but should I assume that Bomberman '94 is the best game of the series? I see that lots of people hype it like no other Bomberman game (except Saturn Bomberman). So many Bomberman games to play... (ok, I won't play them all, some of them I have already played them but I want to play all Super Bomberman as a SNES maniac).
I own Aero Blaster, Final Blaster and Parodius on the PC Engine (HuCard), and all those three are cool shooters. Final Blaster is quite hard, though. I would recommend all three of them.
You get a slow clap for that. In seriousness, though, I'm not knowledgeable at all about Bomberman games, but I have had fun with Mega Bomberman in the past. What's supposedly wrong with it? Seemed pretty similar to Bomberman 94, to the layman at least.
Gate of Thunder Lords/Winds of Thunder Ninja Spirit Super Star Soldier Soldier Blade Final Soldier Star Parodia Air Zonk CD Yeah, the PC Engine is a truly awesome console.
Different music. Different color pallet. Differences in animations. The PCE version has wonderful music. Great little happy tunes. It actually made me sad that they never released the soundtrack:crying: The colors are bright and vivid. There are little animations all over the place... small touches that add that little twinkle of PCE magic that you just don't get on the Mega. I played the PCE version first, and then when I found out they had forted it to Sega I went out of my way to get a copy. Upon playing it, I literally said out loud "What the F**k is this?!" and never touched it again.
From what I played on VC I suggest: YS 1&2 : it's an RPG but it is subbed and dubbed in english ( quite good too ) . It has a blazing fast combat system, an incredible score and ton of charming. Soldier Blade: great vertical shmup. Recommended. New Adventure Island: It's pure platformer bliss, a game that will test your reflex ( pushed run button is a must ). Good graphic a nice music. Dynastic Hero: It's the PC Engine counterpart of Wonderboy IV for Mega Drive. A side scrolling Action RPG that's worth your time if you haven't play before. Then the are the usual favorites as Devil Crush, Military Madness, Castlevania. Some quirky game are Air Zonk, Detana Twinbee,Cho Aniki and Star Parodier.
I never owned the HuCard of it. CD Denjin was apparently the definitive version, so that's the one I had.
CD Denjin is a sequel to PC Denjin, the HuCard. It's not quite as good though, lacks a bit of charme and creativity compared to its predecessor.
