Waiting for the Miyamoto keynote to start, I’m sitting three rows from the front. Close enough to see Nintendo’s resident BMOC, Reggie Fils-Aime at the front of the crowd, working it with his trademark smile and good will. He poses for pictures, he signs Wiimotes, he presses the flesh with a goodnatured ease that would make even the most seasoned politician weep with envy.

    http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/03/gdc_ni...dos_k.html#more

“Kick his arse and take his name!†someone shouted from a few rows behind me.

    “Who?†answered Reggie in mid-autograph.

“Phil Harrison, front row!†Sure enough, there was Phil Harrison, seated dead center, front row. Looks like he could show up on time for Nintendo’s keynote, but not Sony’s.

With a grin and a chuckle, Reggie replies, “Some would say we’ve already done that.â€

    Touchdown. The crowd goes wild.

    ouch.

Haha, but I bet Phil laughed as hard as the others, and then even harder evily in the mirror at HOME.

    See what I did there?

Also, that section ends with "Read on to find out how it all went horribly wrong after that."

Yes, it was clever. I'm not being sarcastic either. Nintendo sure has some competition in this regard.. But I'm not going to call "abandon ship" for a feature that is (personally) irrelevant to gaming anyhow. I mean, HOME can do something FOR the experience, but it's not the focal point.

I think it is a great time to be a consumer in the videogame market. We have these companies desperately fighting each other and pushing themselves far and beyond what we could expect to gain our loyalty. All this competition is really driving innovation, specifications and services. The XB360 wouldn't have been tri-core had it not been for the announcements about cell CPU, the PS3 wouldn't have had the RSX if it hadn't been for the ATI GPU in the XB360, nor motion sensing if it hadn't been for the Wii.

Nintendo seem to be the ones least phased about the competition but that's because they learned the hard way with the GC and are going their own way, which is the right way in this instance.

The battle is really between Microsoft and Sony IMO, Nintendo will continue the way they always have but with a bigger audience than they have enjoyed for a while. Good on them.

Dude, I would like to get a wiimote signed by shiggy, even iwata, but that assclown of reggie? guys hes just a PR douche, hes not even a real designer nor a guy that had anything to do with any consoles or games during design.

Honestly I cant help but laugh at those stupid fanboys that thing that all the wedgies they got in high school (maybe by playstation fanboys) will be somehow redeemed just becos a PR guy from nintendo (reggie) verbally "pwn3d" the sony CEO.

I'll tell you what would be a real "pwn3d": the PS3 ruling the market for another damn generation...

EDIT: indeed, what came after that shows who's paying the bill at the end.

BTW, remember when I told you that if any company released a console like the Wii they would be burned to death, but that the RDF around nintendo is what keeps them unharmed? well:

Still, everyone clapped, cheered, and hooted approval when he was done, proving that he could get up there and read the phone book and still receive universal love and devotion from the crowd.

The muslims may be crazy, but at least they worship a prophet, not a brand...

Yeah, he's usually that way, so keep that in mind.

He does make a few points, especially that part about Reggie being a PR tool. Reggie says some things that really make sense, but other things that are blatantly inflating his company's presence. But alas, that IS the job of the PR!

And killing the games in the process. I mean if you really want to swing the Wiimote around, then Nintendo can do no wrong. But where are the days when the companies exhausted their resources to make really, really fucking good games. Gone! Instead, they're making them smaller (handhelds -- don't get me started), better* graphics (more polygons anyway, but a lot of recent stuff looks like shit I think), and very little else. The sad thing is that people buy this shit up. This is the downside of Nintendo selling Wii upon Wii to "non-gamers". Those of us that want at least the option of sticking to the basics will be playing Mame, emulators, and our old consoles.

Yeah, I know this gen just started, but Little Big Planet is the first thing I've seen on the coming horizon that looks like a really fresh idea that (seemingly) doesn't rely on motion sensor (or at least doesn't have to). Nintendo could do some good by making the Wiimote an option and quit tacking it onto games that didn't have it planned from the get-go (Super Paper Mario, and from what I understand, the next Kirby), but then... what would everyone do if they had to use a controller the old-fashioned way.

Yeah, I'm a dinosaur. Sue me.
