Is there a way to search for codes to circumvent the region lock in some Mega Drive / Genesis games? I'd like to play the US Genesis Weapon Lord on a PAL Mega Drive. There's a few region unlock codes for other games in the manual, so I guess the Action Replay guys found them somehow.
Aw, crap, now that I have the code, it seems like my Action Replay has died on me. It still channels through any games plugged in, but when I set the lever to the menu position, it won't start anymore. Before I go find a new one: Are the Action Replay and Game Genie codes really compatible?
AR and GG codes are completely different. AR codes overwrite RAM values each video frame, and steal CPU time to do so. Because of that they're less reliable than GG codes which modify ROM in real time. AR codes however are quicker to create (hence the trainer option). For anti-protection codes GG are much better since the codes are only needed during a few checks and won't effect game performance like AR. It's also possible to make protection routines that AR can't thwart.
Guess my device of choice for the replacement will be a Game Genie, then. Thanks for the info, both of you.
The switch has probably broken loose from the solder on the PCB, which is a known issue with Action Replays. It will need to be fixed. There's a few things important to note with the Genesis cheat carts. First, the Action Replay (non-Pro Version) changes only ROM just like the Game Genie. You can convert any Action Replay codes that don't begin with FF to Game Genie using one of the many conversion utilities found around the net. Game Genie codes can be converted to Action Replay format, too. The Pro Action Replay is the version that adds RAM support (codes that begin with FF) These codes can't be used with the regular Action Replay nor converted to Game Genie format.
