I'm currently looking for a PSONE to scavenge a laser from to fix a launch model Playstation. I've found one on eBay that the seller says "doesn't power on". Do you think the laser would still be good in this console? Also, are power issues common for the PSONE and is there a known fix? Ideally, I'd like to scavenge the laser from this unit then fix it up and get it working again.

If the price is right, it's probably worth a shot. Personally I've had decent luck with the Chinese clone "BAM" model lasers, which are cheap and can be bought new.

Same here on the Chinese knock-off lasers. I have used 3 in different machines and they work absolutely perfect. A lot of people seem to have issues with them or just despise them since they are ''cheap fake rubbish''.

Maybe I just got lucky. I'm a fan of them though :)

No one could ever tell you the answer to this. Its pointless asking.

Common issues - bad power jack (needs resoldering), blown fuses (need replacing) and metal shielding shorting the board.

Maybe, but I thought I'd ask anyway, since...

As you said, there's a few common power issues with the PSONE. If one of these issues are the reason the console it's not powering on, it seems pretty good that the laser is fine right? ;)

If it doesnt power on, you have no clue about the laser. It could quite easily be someone who has just cobbled together a console out of non working spares and flip them on ebay, rather than throwing them away. This happens quite often if you are buying faulty consoles... its best to check the sellers history, if they sell a lot of them - stay away. If its just obviously someone who has done a clear out - then its probably OK.

    Good point!

Checking his feedback, I can't find any other PSONE consoles he's sold. He says he brought the console as broken, so it sounds like he'd had nothing to do with it.

Just wanted to chime in and say that I have done this for numerous systems, most recent being the SCPH-1001 and it works like a charm. The system runs like it did when I bought it on launch day.
