This is a general reminder for anyone with a PS3 build that originated from a disc.

You cannot rip the contents with a copy and paste. If you do this your data WILL BE UNUSABLE TO EVERYONE.

If you wish to preserve metadata, make an ISO or MDF/MDS, upload the ISO or MDF/MDS and state that it has not been decrypted. This will ensure a 1:1 copy is made of the disc.

To decrypt it, load the disc itself or make an ISO or MDF/MDS, mount it (optional for ISO), and use PS3Gen to decrypt it to a designated directory as raw decrypted files. If you do this you will lose metadata but will have decrypted files that can be handled properly.

@Borman @Jackhead or any other moderator, if you could sticky this post that would be great. If you feel this needs to be put into the Sony section please do duplicate this thread there as well.

You'd think that's common sense by now, considering it's what has been recommended since the first disc based console generations (even if back then it was not related to the data being encrypted or metadata being available).
Oh well, I guess it doesn't hurt to have a reminder for newcomers :)

A recent item that showed up on betaarchive reminded me that some people dont realize this is a thing that must be accounted for in the PS3 related department.

Yes, because that is in fact a disc.
I've encountered a few people who were given data that was just ripped from the disc, rendering it useless. Both parties were unaware of this as an honest mistake, but in one case the original disc owner no longer had the disc to properly rip, so they were left with a few problems.

It's important to remember this as once it's copied that way, you cannot even rebuild the data to decrypt. It's just not possible.

If you have a disc, be sure you dump it the RIGHT way. Either ISO not decrypted, or fully decrypted loose files. This ensures that nothing can go wrong.
