The case for my copy of MERCS has developed a strange set of markings on the side that make it look dirty when it is not. When I clean it off (with water), it looks solid black, but as it dries they come right back. It does not appear to be scratched. Can anyone identify what is going on here and how to remedy the issue? Here is a picture of the markings in question.

This is what I do anytime I have to clean a console or case. I'd get a toothbrush, wet it a little, and add some dish soap on top, not too much though. Just start scrubbing the case lightly and see if that helps. For me, that usually works wonders on really dirty consoles.

I would try isopropyl alcohol first. If it's something that does not look like will clean off, then it's probably damage to the surface of the plastic due to age/deterioration. In that case, something like Armor All or perhaps car wax can help lessen the dull look. You shouldn't need to apply a lot to see if it makes any difference. Apply only to the problem area and of course remove the cover art first. If using Armor All, be sure to rub out the greasiness before putting back the cover art.

ok first of all, take the case artwork, manual and game out. Then scrub it in water with tooth brush and maybe scotch bright scrubbing pad. I have seen all kinds of video game blemishes but I have not seen this one before. Not sure what this is all about but obviously looks like grime. If it is not then it is some kind of plastic degeneration. You could try ''Armor all'' standard plastic resurfacer then.

HA! Honestly, if you said it would work and you've done it before, I would try it. As far as mold goes, usually anything I've had that got mold on it showed it in all stages until it was actually gone, so I kinda doubt it, but it is possible. I'd be surprised as I've kept this in a decent environment for years with all my other games which do not have this issue. Still, anything is possible I guess.

Try eucalyptus oil if you can find it, that stuff can cut through a lot grime with ease.

As was mentioned - your dealing with plastic that is deteriorating. Probably be best to look at automotive products that renew the plastic as opposed to just masking it with a grease/wax like product. There are non-greasy cleaning products. I use Meguiar's Natural Shine Protectant on my vehicles. It cleans, leaves a natural look and protects without that greasy formula you see with Armor All.

One thing that might be worth trying - Dettol wipes (or similar). I use these to shine and get the crap off computer mice, shine up cartridges; works a treat.

Vanilla Armor All applies a lasting Silicon film, Im not sure I would call it greasy. I like that product, it does wonder on those ''meh'' loooking N64. Still I would be curious to try and compare with the product you mentionned. I will see if I can find Meguiar's Natural Shine here in Canada.
