I thought Nintendo a while ago took action against people renting/hiring their games. I kwow a few people/stores still do.....but.....I have just had an e-mail saying "RENT IT NOW" Starfox before it hits the shelves Blockbusters. Did I miss something :-(
haha well times have changed and they really dont have the muscle anymore to do stuff like that... i still wish they did, or at least the Dreamcast was still leading the console race
I remember hearing something back in the days of the NES about Nintendo filing a lawsuit against Blockbuster or another large rental chain for renting games in the US only to lose. I can't confirm it though because I can't find a case. I do know they did win a case against Blockbuster about the copying of instruction books.
I'm not sure what the exact outcome was, but it somehow ended up that rentals were legal in some form or another - can you imagine the 'damages' Nintendo could recoup suing Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, along with any other regional chains and as many mom-and-pop places as they could get thier hands on? I'm personally of the mind that there was possibly some sort of royalties/licensing fee that had to be paid - it seems a Nintendo thing to do.
didnt nintendo sign a deal with blockbuster/hollywood video for that? It's not like they are doing it by themselves. The rental industry has hit bad times. Blockbuster is being pinched by netflix and gamefly, so they get rid of late fees (not really) and they also bought Hollywood video. Stuff like this is a marketing ploy to help them get business. No doubt that videogame companies are in a better position right now since Blockbuster had to pay to do that obviously.
Blockbuster Blockbuster hasn't bought Hollywood Video. Hollywood and another company have actually agreed on merger terms, but Blockbuster is attempting to prevent said merger and execute a hostile takeover of Hollywood. As of right now, nothing is set in stone regarding the two companies. -hl718
