I have many of the original Gameboy that has LCD problem. They all have missing vertical lines caused by ribbon cable coming off the LCD module. It is a very common problem with the early Gameboy, I don't know if it was bad glue or too much heat by careless kids. (ie left in the sun)

How would that get fixed? I would like to try and get those LCD restored so I can unload them on feeBay, and fully working Gameboy is worth a bit more than one with missing lines.

First things first, where are you based?
are you handy with a soldering iron?

Press the cable to the screen down, if the lines dissapear your screen is fine, you just need to ensure it gets proper contact (glue perhaps?) Very easy fix.

    Michigan, USA, and no.

I checked the few I have just dissembled. 2 showed improvement when I pressed down the ribbon cable in some spot so it is defiantly coming loose. One the cable seems partially ripped at mid point and is probably not fixable. It looks like maybe someone attenmpted light mod as the white plastic frame is partially cut as well. Last one did not show any improvement.

Are you saying the cable as actually torn? It should be fixable, get an x-acto knife and expose the copper conductors. then bridge them with some solder, I did that when I tore the laser cable on my >$1000 laserdisc recorder, and the fix had held up great. If you have the more common problem of the cable being detached from the glass heat up a soldering iron aand remove the rubber pad and the tape below, then with the power on and contrast turned to black, rub the ribbon cable/glass interface with the SIDE of the tip, do so until the lines work. It takes practice but that will work. BTW I do these repairs as part of my job so I do know a thing or two about them.

The cable should be fixable, I think you can solder to repair it, somebody mentioned this in more detail.
