its true the fat ps2 does have a belt, its also true that the drive assembly ala laser and co, use the screw n rod method, the belt is used for ejecting and closing the drive tray which also lowers / raises the
    drive assembly.

the belt is under a plastic cover near the front of the drive on some models u can unscrew it from underneath the drive others the screw is ontop once the tray is taken out.

    of course i haven't see every ps2 model ;)

I've already brought a new PS2 to replace this one (and I've already repaired this one as well ;))

I have seen every single model/type out there and I have to mention that you're 100% correct.

I've seen damn near every NTSC-U PS2 and didn't know there was a belt in there. Shows what I know.

Ps2 phat has to use one of the shitiest designs ever, a model 1 mega cd is more reliable! On one I use to have the plastic part that prevents the tray from fully popping out broke off resulting in the tray becoming loose and miss Aligned. Thankfully I had a fliptop installed for swap magic use but was a nightmare for 2 disc games. Recently got a slim but the damn plastic that hold the other sensor is loose resulting in me having to put something on top to hold it down. Only reliable sony consoles ive used are redesigned ps1 and slim ps3 which has suprisingly never had problems.

After reading what you typed here I think I can safely assume you had an SCPH-5000x which were indeed cost reduced pieces of garbage.

just a note on the cheap plastic parts, with the new 3D plastic printing technology, replacing these parts for retro consoles should become easier and cheaper, that is my hope anyway.
