Yeah I was worried that I may have burnt it out, I did go in very small increments though so there was maybe something else broken anyway. I've ordered a new unit and hopefully the dreamcast will be working

    Bump!
So, what's the sure way method to fix a dead laser in 2016?
Which parts to buy and how to set them up properly?

Disc spins and pickup motor is fine. However the dreamcast doesn't notice any discs and behaves as if the drive is empty.

I recall someone having used a CD-ROM pickup to rebuild it but it didn't read GD-ROMs. I'll see if I can dig that up later today.

    EDIT: http://dreamcast-talk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1982

No idea how legit it is or easy. His guide seems like crap now that I read it many years later.

Thanks. I found this guy ***://youtu.be/oJSnrzvrC_I?t=744 . He's repairing both the spin motor, pickup and drive control pcb. He took the pickup from a Samsung CD Master 48E SC-148. And he claims that the pickup/laser is in fact identical to the dreamcast's samsung drive as both drives used the same exact part. But modified for pc with one extra pin (17 for pc vs 16 for dc). He's got a thread with all the details here, here's a link in english.

    Bump!
Turns out the solution I wrote about above is only a partial solution.
In the end the guy made it read cd-rs and some gd-roms..
Can't believe nobody has this thing figured out properly by now..?

If I remember right.. I remember reading something about using a laser from a old Creative PC drive.. ITs the Creative CD5233E Model..
If you cant find another GDROM drive.. Its another option.

Yeah man, I got that far. I already got two replacement lasers from different PC CD-ROM drives.
I just want opinions on which one is better, and any general info on using the two lasers on a dreamcast.
