I've been trying to fix my uncle's PS2 for the past day with no luck. No surprises here - it's a 30003 (the first PAL model; datestamps on the plastic say Dec. 2000). I got one game to play ok once (Colin McRae 04), but everything else dies before finishing loading, or dies after about 30 seconds of playing the game.

I got some help from a friend who fixes/mod's PS2s, and tried some of the adjustments he recommended (after cleaning the thing). I tried adjusting the height (that big white cog at the back of the disc drive) but that just made things worse. I also tried adjusting the dealies on the laser (are they just pot's?) - the DVD one was at about 770Ω, and I adjusted it between 600 and 1400Ω and it didn't really make much difference. The only CD game I have is Gradius V so I didn't mess with that much (I put it down by about 50Ω but the game would still lock up about 20 seconds after playing).

So I've come to the conclusion that it's pretty much dead, so I'm going to try and get a replacement laser. My friend recommended the KHS-400C laser as he said it'll fit in a V3. Only problem is trying to get one. He recommended modzone.com but they seem to be out of stock. Are there any other places you guys can recommend? I'd need some place that'll deliver here though - most UK shops will if I annoy them enough ^_^

It is possible to use any laser on any PS2 unit. You have to use an .elf file called PS2 Lens Changer. It is possible to use on a non-modded PS2, but seems a bit fiddly; easier with a Dev1 mode modchip.

TBH, install a HDD and a DMS4 & HDloader and run games from HDD. Either that or go get a new PS2/two.

It's not mine - it's my uncle's, and it's mainly my cousin (who's like 6 years old) who plays it, so mod chips and hard disks are *kinda* out of the question... ^_^

Yes the laser is indeed dead, and you probably just burned it out totally by adjusting the properties of it, replacemnt laser's can be bought from here in the uk

    http://www.consolemodz.co.uk

You are better to just buy the official ps2 laser whn replacing them as this save's any hassle from it not working, not fitting etc.., then again at the rice of replacemnt laser's for the ps2 still coming in at 50 squid, you may just want to either buy another second hand console or a new ps2.Replacing the laser effectively make's the console brand new though if you have never experienced any problem's with the motherboard.

I have seen many problem's with the UK, and USA and later Japanese unit's when I used to repair and modify the machine's but I have never yet had one problem with my scph 10000 unit which was the first version of the ps2 out, and it is chipped and has worked like a bastard since I have had it.Seem's like this unit is indestructible, lol!! :D

Hope you get the machine fixed soon, good luck bro.

Thanks for the link - do you use those guys? £45 is pretty expensive - www.modzone.com list them for only €50 (and £45 = €65) but then again they don't actually have any in stock.

I know he could just get another second hand one, but there's no telling how knackered the lasers are in them, and a new PS2's at least twice as much as a new laser. I just hope everything else is ok...
