Huh, I don't take hints that well. Please elaborate?

I meant, there's lots of only-black-and-white thinking going on here.

I got that, mate. I was wondering what exactly you meant by that. An example (using what has actually been said) would be appreciated.

Over time, it further damages the supply of legitimate copies. Better to seek out a bootleg from new parts first.

You want an example? Sure, how about...
...like the notion of "copyright" or "licensing terms" doesn't even exist.

That's just reality. You can deny it as much as you want but that's how things are.
Sure, copyright exists, but that quote was about homebrew and how some homebrew devs expect that a chinese bootlegger/etsy asshole asking $50 will care about their "intellectual property".
And they do somehow expect that because they become upset when their illegal sonic hack which uses copyrighted (oops) characters and resources gets bootlegged.
Same goes for original homebrew content producers of freeware releases.
Those expectations are incredibly naive, with emphasis on incredibly.
Would I make repros of a rom who's dev explicitly asked not to? No, I wouldn't.
Would I buy a repro of that same rom? Maybe, if the game is good enough. Why? Well, why don't you tell me how I can have a cart of it when the author refuses to make one. Don't mention everdrive, I'm not going to get one.
I'm just pointing out the logical flaw in wanting to have control over something you willfully (!) put outside of your pheasible scope of control.
Did you even read the quote of Sik that I posted? He's got a good sense for common sense. Like he said do what you want with the rom. Because he realises that worrying about stuff you can't possibly do anything about is pointless. And, I guess, he also feels flattered that anyone likes his stuff enough to put it on a cartridge.

I don't understand that. What do you mean seek out a bootleg from new parts?
Oh, I see. I was using the word repro kind of loosely and included bootlegs in it.

Well, isn't this a turn of events? Another thread where people dawn their white horse and try to take moral high ground on something entirely unpreventable. Reproductions will made and the makers don't give two shits about the ideals of their opposition or minutiae that makes them unique snowflakes. The debate here is a complete waste of time.

My bad, re the people getting fucked over, that isn't what you said, sorry. Well...except now you're stating that people getting fooled by repros are not at a level worth your discussion. How nice....(and you're still avoiding the real debate...)

Anyway...Takeshi has shown me the error of my ways. Of course there's no point debating the 'unpreventable'.

I honestly can't believe I've read something so stupid. Mind....absolutely....fucking....blown...

I would love to continue this conversation with you if you strayed less off topic and didn't discuss what you perceive to be other users personal qualities in a derogatory manner. Thanks for the chat, friend.

I'm chill af, bro. Replying to people replying to me is a pretty normal thing to do. :p

And again, you're all about the homebrew. The thread was about repros in general, so that's the context I'm gonna view these statements in. Deal with it. Besides, why should homebrew authors have less rights? Just because they (usually) can't afford the lawyer necessary to eff you up the ah?

Oh, so all those copy right notices were put in just for fun? Question to you: What form of "asking you" would this author have to choose for you to honor it?

Question to everyone else: In what situation would you prefer to throw money at some "dirty chinese pirate" instead of pirating it in some other way (given there are actually no physical copies available)? Because I can't think of a single one. My stance on piracy is, if you do it, at least make sure the least amount of people possible make a profit from it.

No, I'm not going to deal with you intentionally misrepresenting and distorting my words. :p If you insist on doing so I will simply start ignoring you. ;)
    Cheers, love. :)

Tbh I actually un-ignored you for a bit because I was interested in your opinion on the "explicitly asked not to" issue. But if this is how you're gonna play it, I guess let's agree to disagree and mutually ignore each other from now on. So long!

That's the way you're "playing it", dear. Why should I humour you if you allow yourself to twist my words how you see fit?
You just said that despite me "being all about homebrew" you're going to intentionally take my statements out of context. Any further engagement with you loses any sense once you do that. My words lose all meaning and instead become your words that you've decided to put in my mouth. The result of this is you having a conversation with yourself with me as your prop. If you honestly can't see this then I am sorry for you. Take care, darling.

So I'm a bit confused. You're saying tough shit to homebrew developers since they chose to release their game and it gets bootlegged because if they didn't want that to happen then they shouldn't have released it? Then you say they could have made their own carts, but that doesn't stop someone else from making bootlegs too. And then you're also saying too bad to anyone that can't tell apart a bootleg from an original. If someone puts in the effort and has the materials and tools needed they can create *very* close duplicates to original games. Which is what has led us to where we are now where you have to open a game up to examine the circuit board to know if it is original or not. But when you are buying a game you do not always have the ability to open it up and see. And with an online sale you could be shown pictures of a real game and real pcb and then be sent a convincing bootleg that unless you open you won't know isn't legitimate.

Repro bootlegs aren't all bad. It is nice when they are seen for what they are and enable players to have games that they couldn't otherwise have. For example prototype or unreleased games. Or translated games that never made it to their region. That was what people were doing way back when very few people were making repro cartridges. But then people had to come along and tarnish it by making bootlegs of commercially available games.

I'm talking about freeware homebrew devs. Not indie devs who stand to make money by releasing carts.

As for people getting fooled by bootlegs, I don't even want to talk about that basic sh1t. Come on. You look up the proper cover art (for example sega retro), you ask for pcb photo from seller. If seller refuses - move on, or take a chance if you have any buyer protection or if you just feel like rolling the dice. It's not that hard. And bootlegs were available very early, way before any translations got made into carts.
Bootlegs are also great for buying overpriced games that you just want to play. Not everyone is a collector, some of us are gamers and paying 100+ dollars for a widely available game is ridiculous.

Yes, bootlegs were available a long time ago. But they looked like bootlegs. Now more people have access to better printing and scanning technology and can create far more convincing bootlegs. And you are ignoring that there are people that are enjoying retro games and buy them but are not as knowledgeable as us. And even people that are aware of the bootlegging problem could get fooled, particularly with games that haven't had their prices inflated to huge numbers. Maybe they are buying a 50 or 60 dollar game and not some 100, 200, 600 dollar game which would be examined more carefully.

I do agree with you that it can be nice to have repro copies of games for your collection. Flash carts are even better. Bootlegs aren't great though when they are being sold as genuine.
