Giving positive rep=neat. Giving negative rep=getting negative rep right on back as a revenge tactic. It is the same exact problem that eBay has with bad buyers giving good sellers feedback sanes the complete inability for retaliation from the seller. Not necessarily advocating its removal but I'm not exactly what what the point of it is if it cannot be used properly.
I don't know if retaliatory feedback works if your given negatives in mass, but I like the idea of being able to give people negatives if it were fixed up a bit. Because then it gives people the power to bury user posts who have too many negatives because it is likely just spam, trolling, or just unhelpful crap. Take for example this thread, where GoH writes.... http://www.assemblergames.com/forum...-m-getting-no-where-and-I-m-still-young/page2 Just another example of the kind of crap he "contributes" to the Assemblergames.com forum. By all rights, we should all be able to give him negatives so that everything he posts ends up like this: GodofHardcore has replied, but it has been hidden due to bad user reputation. Click "Show" if you really want to view it.
Personally I think the whole rep, thanks and like button stuff is not needed on a forum like this. I won't be using them for sure and I couldn't care less if I never get a like, rep or whatever either. I feel we have a good community here and it's easy to see who the arse heads are and who's not. What would happen if people started using the "report" button on posts that are deemed to be trolling, unhelpful, don't contribute anything, or just plain wtf? If enough people did so, would anything be done about it? Or would it just piss moderators off with a deluge of notifications and people would be told to stop? (^_^); Edit: On another note, if we had a "Dislike" button, which would allow people to add their name to the dislike list under a post, that would work just fine as well.
Before the upgrade, you couldnt see who had given you the rep. Which means you couldnt get "revenge rep". However, it seems to be a setting that has been overlooked.
I didn't even realize other people had been giving out rep. I just started doing it a little recently just for fun.
I thought that as well, same happens on eBay if you send negative you get negative. I believe rep, thanks, likes, dislikes etc are for warez forums and not idea sharing and discussion forum, however I think the "thanks" will be okay for the download section, so there isn't 20 pages of people saying "Thanks", which is more meaningful I know, but it's just unnecessary space on the server.
eBay hasnt allowed sellers to give negative/neutral feedback for some time. They did this to stop retaliation feedback
A rep system means nothing to me, on other forums people get +rep for posting total crap (copied and pasted news for example), then other people get it for really helpful replies. The person could have a massive rep and have contributed nothing, yet a person could have a couple of rep points and contributed loads. I do however like the thanks system, its great for when people post downloads. Example here: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?39748-Xiaolin-Showdown-on-DebugKit that thread has two pretty pointless replies of people just saying thanks, where as if people used the thanks system correctly any replies could simply be discussing the download its self / any problems with it. The thanks hack we have installed here can also add rep points to a user, and can be limited to certain forums. Users can also be limited to how many thanks they can give a day.
