I just got my cart this morning, and every game I've thrown at it has worked beautifully. The save files are being created in the SAVE directory properly (and I remember to reset then power off, rather than just power off), no issues with control or graphics. Only weird thing is my rumble/mem pak isn't being detected, so I can't copy my saves from it to the SD card (I'm on 2.04). Doesn't matter, all I had on that was Rogue Squadron and I'm fine with starting over. My question is, could someone give me a rough list of what games require you to change/force a particular save format, and what that format should be? Like I noticed a couple games listed somewhere here which require forcing sram to keep saves, and the games I've played so far all came up using eep4k; I gather that the majority of games you can just start without changing the save format, but it would be good to have a list of those few that this is not the case (might even be worth a sticky if they remain consistent through updates).
It would be great to have a list of such games, but as far as I know there isn't one yet. If you look through the official ED64 forum (http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?board=4.0) you'll find a few games mentioned, I'd advise you to look at http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=759.0 which also mentions games that need specific roms to run (Banjo Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, etc).
Thanks for those, one of them is one I had looked for earlier for another reason when I was first setting up the ED64 and then lost the link. I think I'll try to compile what's been listed elsewhere in this thread, starting with the fact that any game that saves to the Controller Pack cannot be made to save anywhere anyway on the SD card. If I can find the list of games that that applies to I'll post it here. I think the ED64 menu info needs to be updated by KRIKzz with regards to save types in 2.04 anyway, since it's not really clear how to set the save type and have it stick. I registered over at his board too, so I may ask about that there and cross-post the results. In the meantime, back to Goldeneye! Edit: Large double post to follow, I apologize ahead of time.
Ok, here's the start of something big. I found this info at http://s9.zetaboards.com/Nintendo_64_Forever/topic/7041206/1/ - all credit goes to "Mop it up", the OP of that thread, I'm just summarizing/condensing for ease of access, and in the interest of saving people new to using the ED64 like me all kinds of time trying to force a game to do something it can't do and getting frustrated. This list is of primarily North American region ROMs, but likely the same is true of their European & Japanese counterparts. So here's a list of games known to require a Controller Pak for saving (and therefore impossible to make save their data on the SD card, according to KRIKzz): He also lists several games which have no save functionality at all, and the majority of the rest either save to the cartridge or use passwords. So there you have it, a good start. If people would be so kind as to post here those games which they have found to require using a specific save type (sram/eep4k/flash, etc) other than default, it would save tons of time as well.
A sticky listing every 'special case' game (i.e. games that need a certain rom, or a certain memory setting) would be great, and ideally would be posted both here and on Krikzz's forums. Don't forget Perfect Dark (best game of all time, if you ask me), and Goldeneye X (http://www.goldeneyevault.com/viewfile.php?id=202), plus Perfect Dark with the Goldeneye weapons in multiplayer and the sims able to use mines (http://www.shootersforever.com/forums_message_boards/viewtopic.php?t=5996&), and Perfect Dark with the single player levels as multiplayer levels, including weather, it's not ideal as the levels aren't designed for multiplayer, but it's worth trying, and you can use sims (bots) of course (http://www.goldeneyevault.com/viewfile.php?id=282)
I did a long post last night to this thread on that subject and I am still waiting for it to show up, it said it needed moderator approval, but nothing has shown up yet. I think I need to get a new controller or two because the analog sticks on mine are getting to be pretty loose, but those games are definitely on my list
Personally, I'm no fan of the official N64 joypod, and the fact that the analogue stick gets looser over time is another big minus as far as I'm concerned. By far my favourite joypad for the N64 is the Mako Pad 64 (or Makopad 64), which is simply the transparent version of the Superpad 64, and it's fantastic; due to the redesign (it has two prongs, not three, unlike the official N64 controller) all controls and buttons are accessible without you moving your hand, unlike the official N64 pad. For a review, see: http://s9.zetaboards.com/Nintendo_64_Forever/topic/7186633/1/ (the review is of the Super Pad 64, the top right hand one in the first photograph, one black one with two prongs - the Makopad 64 is the exactly the same but with AUTO-FIRE and SLOW DOWN buttons, and is transparent instead of black. I've had mine for more than ten years, and it's still as responsive now as it ever was - I've hammered it with Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Super Smash Bros., and countless other N64 classics. The analogue stick is made of metal, unlike the official controller, so it has not yet even started to wear away. http://www.retrogames.co.uk/more/on/details/015814 Or see the video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1bQfu-HAqc (and ignore the post in the comments section where it says "There wasn't ever a game where you hade to use the dpad and the? analong stick at the same time" - lots of games used both the analogue stick and the D-Pad, such as Duke Nukem 64, Duke Nukem: Zero Hour, and Jet Force Gemini, all of which used the D-Pad to select weapons). Sadly, you'll probably have to look through ebay, local newspapers, or local secondhand shops to find a Makopad 64 nowadays, but of course that's true of all N64 stuff. And the Makopad 64 comes in two types, the Makopad 64 which is transparent and has a couple of "cheat" switches (Slowdown and Autofire, I think - I've never used them), and an opaque black version called the Superpad 64, which lacks the cheat switches. The back opaque version of the Makopad 64 is called the Superpad 64, see the review at: http://s9.zetaboards.com/Nintendo_64_Forever/topic/7186633/1/#new (it's the top right hand controller on the first photograph). Beware though, as there is at least one other joypad for the N64 called the Superpad 64, which is *not* what you want. I cannot recommend this joypad strongly enough, it's comfortable to hold, allows you to use every control (even the Left Shoulder Button) without moving your hands (unlike the official joypad), and it's really made to last.
Thanks for the heads up, I read that review and a couple others, and based on that and your recommendation I ordered one from an ebay seller this evening. $15, looks good, couple cosmetic marks but nothing I can't fix, and free shipping lol. I found a couple others, depending on how that performs I may buy another. Still no sign of my post from last night, I think it may be gone :: ugh :: - I'll likely have to try again, if I do it'll be a new thread.
