Disregard this thread, I have no need to come to this forum any further.

Are you talking about emulators on the consoles themselves or on PC?

The emulation of NES, Snes and Genesis is of high quality. Yoshi's Island is not perfect but playable
I don't think there's an emulator for the n64 other than official Nintendo one which plays Ocarina of Time/Master Quest and Majora's Mask.
People have confirmed other n64 games working, out of which I've only really tried Mario 64 just to see if it could be done, it worked surprisingly well. Don't get your hopes up with the other games.
PSX I have no idea about, possibly nothing playable.

If you are going to run homebrew on GC I strongly recommend getting an SD-Gecko, and lastly come and see us on http://www.gc-forever.com

I was about to make a thread asking very similar questions when Google brought up this 2-day-old thread. Jackprot!

Anyway, I'm in the same boat. I need to scour my storage boxes for my mod chip (just never got around to installing it!) and will be picking up an XCM case in the near future (when I get bills paid, first!).

Are there any retailers that carry SD-Gecko or similarly constructed SD adapters? http://dx.com/p/pega-sd-card-adapter-for-wii-wiikey-4980 I found this, but in my experience the shipping from DX is amazingly slow or even unreliable. (also http://dx.com/p/wiikey-sd-card-adapter-for-wii-3993 )

I'm not really interested in backing up my collection to DVD-R (or is it +R?), only homebrew/etc.

i got that sd adapter from dx. i am using it on my wii though. it works fine.

to boot from that adapter you need an Action Replay Disc or something that does the same thing. it boots only up to 2 gb sd cards.

modchip way should be easier though. you can just burn a startup disc and use that sd adapter for roms, emulators.

Just got back from my parents' place. Found my Xeno chip and a suitable GC for modding. Now I just have to work up the courage to do the soldering (no big deal, though it has been a while!).

I may just order an adapter from DX then. Give them another shot.

Refresher: Remember to flux your contacts and you should be ok! Also, apply solder to the disc drive pcb before placing the xenogc chip on. I also used a dab of hot glue on every corner every corner of the xenogc..so far, so good!

Could you explain how the adapters form DX work? I tried to do a little research on them, but most of the information pertains to playing gamecube games of the Wii.

    thanks!

I bought an SD adapter off eBay. It was a bit more but it seems DX isn't the store they once were. I don't have an AR but I could possibly use an SD loader or maybe Swiss? Only SD card I have on hand though is a 4 GB SDHC... is there a hardware limit to the SD card I can use or is it dependent on the loader?

if your gc is not modchipped, you have to use AR or SD Media Launcher. you are stuck to 2 GB SD cards. SDHC is not supported. Though after booting Swiss, you can change the card to SDHC, as swiss supports them.

if your gc is chipped, you can autostart swiss from a backup disc and use your SDHC cards at start.

that is all i know, feel free to correct me.

you are fine with SDHC then. i still prefer wii over gamecube because a) i don't use gameboy player b) i can't afford a gamecube component cable, wii component cables are cheap.

Note if you want to heavily dig into imports, that Gamecube modchips do NOT change the internal region.
By default your GC will run all games in English setting.

Japanese mode can have a switch installed. Several JP games have compatibility issues without one.
For European languages Open Sram Language Modifier is homebrew said to tell PAL games to use them. But I don't yet own any to try it.

Attempted to install my Xeno (V2?) chip today and appear to have blown-up my disc drive. Either that or it was toast before I even started (I guess I didn't actually test it, beforehand, haha). Seemed like an easy install as far as mod chips go, but I must have had a short. Oh well, it was a free 'cube anyway (though it does have a new laser assy in it...)

I removed the chip. Now it doesn't respond to the door switch at all, with a lifeless drive.

Gee. Disc drive not working is EXACTLY what happened to special Gamecube plans for me too. It's been down some 6 months and counting. (my partner has been very busy)

I got my Xeno chip today... I expected it to take maybe 10 minutes to install. First I got no light at all, then reworking the solder I got only red. After desoldering the points and removing the chip from the board I soldered wires to the chip, taped off areas of the board and soldered wires to the board, and success. Over 2 hours to get it installed. I'm also using a silver cube with RiData discs and didn't even need to adjust my POT to run a Wind Waker backup. But now I'm stuck on setting up the SD card and boot disc to use it.

I wish I could figure out how to set up a bootable Swiss disc... Swiss, the emulators and all that I find, it seems they just assume you're going to be running this stuff on a Wii and give little info on how to actually make a Gamecube ISO. A lot of the utilities I've found don't come with any real instructions. Swiss' download pack came with an ISO file of less than 1 MB in size and I think to burn a useful Gamecube disc it needs to be the proper size.

I'm planning on grabbing an ebay "broken" GC soon (a DRE machine) and swapping over my "new" laser unit to it. -THEN- I will simply do the Xeno chip with -WIRES- this time since I appear to be inept enough to screw it up despite soldering since I was 10.

The RetroZone ( www.retrousb.com ) sells an adapter to use a SNES controller on the GameCube. I got it for my GB Player but it would also work well for emulators like NES, SNES and Genesis.

You should take a look at the GameCube manual. Don't know if they changed it for newer systems, but for the first NTSC release, there is a very interesting screenshot of the memory manager screen in there. ;)

Nintendo was trollin' since day one.
