Originally, I wanted the button in the controller. It wasn't ignored, I just didn't think it'd be suitable appears it should be enough I suppose.
Would there always be one that requires 5v? I'm looking for the most simple solution possible.

So you're saying 4 wires, I'm guessing two of those are on the reset button points? Where would the other ones go? I know nothing about the N64 pin outs so, I'm going to need information.

    ok so, 4 wires.
2 for 5v and ground to run the IR and relay trigger
The other 2 are for the reset, one wire will go to ground the other to the reset switch.
Pressing ON on the remote will close the relay, same as holding the reset button down. Press OFF to open the relay again (Release reset)

Luckily for you, you have a clear-ish console so you shouldn't need to drill anything.

The n64 has 2 constant out-put voltages from the PSU:
3.3v (mainly used for IC's, LED and the like)
    12v

There is 5v on the AV connector but I don't think it can handle a big load..

So we have basically two options:
    1, Use a 12v IR relay
    2, Use a 5V IR Relay with a regulator

Now we need to decide how it's going to be wired, switched or not?
Meaning you can either power the IR relay directly off the PSU, the only problem with that is if you press ON on the remote whilst the system is off, you may be scratching your head as to why it's not working (It looks like the IR relay has a LED to indicate when it's on presumably).

OR power the IR relay off the power switch on the console, I'm making an assumption that IR relay will reset too OFF when it losses power, thus hopefully avoiding the issue above..

You can always install the remote into the controller but leave that till later :)

You won't need a regulator for the 5v option.

The N64 uses 2 voltages, 12v and 3.3v however in reality the 12v line goes to a 7805 (top right of the motherboard) for audio; so you can get your 5v from there for convenience; or of course if you use 12v, also no issue.

That only applies to an N64 that doesn't have an Everdrive 64 inserted. An Everdrive 64 needs you to reset, so that it can write the game save in it's RAM to the SD card. If you just turn the N64 off and on, then the game saves in the Everdrive 64's RAM will be lost.

Well, the Everdrive 64 version 3 has battery powered RAM, so you can just turn off the N64, but earlier Everdrive 64s don't have this, so you MUST reset the N64 to force those to save.

Please let us know what you decide to do, and how you got on. A remote reset switch could be a popular mod for hardcore N64 fans.

I didn't see this till now, I'll go ahead and check.
EDIT: Appears it does, even let it go for 6s and still saved. The system appears to hold the status until the button is released.

I will be reporting back :)

I guess I wasn't suppose to hook the ground up twice... I moved the reset wire(blue) to the middle pin and it works now.

It fits in perfectly; I didn't even bother to glue it. After you screw the heat sink down it stays in fairly well.

oh, and the IR signal goes through the case without issue.

Yes, reset status is held as long as you hold the button, then the console resets on release.

Tetrisphere utilizes this for a black hole animation that runs while holding down reset when you enter the "vortex" cheat.

That's a beautiful bit of soldering, at least to my inexperienced mind. Does the in-console mod use a battery (so you'll have to open up the case every couple of years), or is it powered from the motherboard?
