I saw the other thread posted early this month on "Thread: looking for Retron 5 hack to play Roms", I was thinking to myself. Is Retron 5 HDMI out really worth the wait to run roms and backups? I decided to pick up Retron 3 instead and purchased SD2NES, Everdrive MD and Everdrive N8 and to finish it off I purchase a professional grade composite to HDMI scaler.

Vola! Here I got a Retron 3 HD 1080p/I glory.

I just own a Raspberry Pi which has HDMI out and is $35, it's tiny. You can FTP new roms and such to it (although I've just put every emulator with every ROM on it). Only downside is the fact that it has to use USB controllers, but anyone can buy a retro style USB controller. I love the fact that you're this dedicated to gaming, but it seems awfully tedious to have bought all of this stuff.

^ This. It's just upscaled composite.

Just wondering, why bother with flash cartridges, on a clone system that outputs composite, which is fed into an upscaler? You could just use a laptop or something else with HDMI-out and some good emulators. I'd understand if you really wanted to use your original cartridges, but like this... I dunno. To each their own, I guess?

At least use the S-video for Genesis and SNES, it is a huge step up from composite.

If I were to do this, I would of just used my actual systems through a scaler.

At least then you could use S-Video for the SNES/Genesis.

Or get a SCART to HDMI upscaler and it'll look even better (does the NES support SCART? I don't think so, but I'm American, so we got like 0 SCART)

Why not just buy a Framemeister from me? You'd get a million times better quality from that plus many image options. Also using composite is a complete waste of time. S-Video is minimum for video quality but even that is poor compared to RGB.

I agree with you completely. If you only want to play ROMs, for the systems involved here you may as well go with the R-Pi. It's cheaper and works pretty well. I'm not a fan of any current clone systems since they all have problems. There is no reason for the SNES and Genesis clones not to output RGB video for example.

Not to mention you can overclock the Pi (if you feel some need for it) and the emulators on it are designed to run in 1080p. Plus they have beautiful cover flow menus that are also in 1080p. But I'm sure none of us are trying to dog on the OP, just give him suggestions. It seems like he jumped right into his idea and apparently should've asked any one of us and it looks like we would've collectively said "no".

Sorry for the delayed reply guys, to be honest. I didn't pay that amount for the Professional grade scaler, it was way way way less then that. If its really $335 for the scaler, I would have contacted Yakumo for a purchase of the Framemeister.

But truly, I am disappointed with how Hyperkin is moving Retron product line, Retron 5 is really nothing more then a android machine with built in native NES, SNES, GENESIS slot with controller support. I was expected more accurate HARDWARE emulation after the Retron 3, instead they took the easy way out and make it Software emulation instead and scaling it via HDMI out.

Feedback acknowledged, I got the Retron 3 quite awhile back and recently acquired the EVERDRIVE N8 and SD2NES. Before Retron 5 was officially announce, I was thinking of selling off the Retron 3 and purchase the Retron 5 (Mainly for the HDMI output) and use it with the N8 and SD2NES. However reviews come in negative for Retron 5 and the system cant even support flashcarts, I decided to purchase a Composite/S-video to HDMI instead, thus it lead to this thread opening.
