That's what I wanna know. If it plays Famicom games it needs to play Akumajo Dracula all up in this bitch.

Yeah... that's a fucking awful filter. And I've yet to hear a decent argument for how using this thing is better than using emulators on a computer.

I'll stick with my acer emulation laptop connected to my TV. At least the filters aren't nasty like in that video.

Filter doesn't look that bad honestly.

But the sound on the otherhand. Whatever processing they are doing on that sounds like ass.

Retron 5 is an emulation machine that plays carts, of course it can run Castlevania. Judging from the success of other Android-based machines, Hyperkin decided to go that route instead of cloning hardware. The filter can be dealt with, and the sound can be improved with firmware updates.

I really don't get it. I simply can't believe that emulator users would want to use real cartridges while most people that use real consoles already prefer using roms thanks to devices like the everdrive.

One must be pretty retarded to buy this thing instead of a $25 raspberry pi or a similar device suited for emulation.

I fall into that category. I already have the complete Genesis, NES, and N64 library.

Guys, this is for people that want to experience these games on flat screen tvs. It's got HDMI out, filters, wireless controllers and so on.

We can all debate the original experience is better, but this one will plug and play with good image quality. For most people, this is perfect. Brand new hardware supporting old games.

Expect the price of some particular games going up after this gets released.

Wow, that filter is fucking hideous. Why not just get a modded Wii?

You can still have this experience with emulators & with the original hardware (with composite out). If you play on your computer, you can even get a retro controller -> usb converter, or even a USB retro controller knockoff... I play retro games, both original hardware and via emulation, on my flat screen TV with no issues, whatsoever.

You are right though, for a lot of people this is perfect. This certainly has some sort of nostalgia value for people with money to burn, or someone who has no idea what to tell [insert relative here] to get them for Christmas. This would be a good value at <=$100. The fact that it is 5-in-1 is its saving grace, because the consoles it emulates aren't particularly expensive or rare on their own. If I had thought that Nintendos/Famicom/SNES/etc were rare, expensive or prone to breaking, I'd be interested in this, but I know better & already own the hardware.

I'm more interested in things like portable famicoms/SNES.

Buy a Framemeister XRGBmini from me :D Use your original games on your original console with much higher quality HDMI out and scanlines (if you want them) that look like your CRT would. Mind you, they do cost more than a Retro Gen I guess.

I'm fussy but if I was to use my original cartridges I'd rather use real hardware, not emulation. That's why I have a dedicated laptop under the TV for emulation from Atari 2600 all the way up to model 2/3 arcade emulation. I do understand that original hardware while not rare at all may not be available to everyone or there are those people who don't have the space to have everything connected. These are the people Retrogen is aimed at.

Given that this thing will have software updates possible and has a USB port, I can see at some point just loading ROMs off USB storage.

Also, the filter used in the video is god awful. It should make your eyes bleed. It completely ruins the graphics. You must be nearly blind if you think it looks good.

the only filter (if it even can be called a filter) really needed is a proper scanline generator. scrap all the rest, just not worth the development time.

it's not for rom junkies, it's for people to have an all in one console for their real carts. It's targeting the same people who buy the Retro Duo, FamiTwin etc.

WE know it's running android and emulators - but they don't advertise it. And the average joe doesn't give a shit or know - they know it's a 100 dollar plastic box that plays their Nintendo, super nintendo, genesis and gameboy games with bluetooth controllers.
