Any recommendations on good shops for electronics/obscure stuff in the NYC area?

I came in to say precisely this. There's nothing (game-related or otherwise) in that entire hellpit of a city that you couldn't get cheaper on Ebay.
One proprietor in NYC did at least have the good grace to be ashamed when I asked for a price check on an unboxed Twin Famicom and it was $400

Really, besides the occasional flea markets and yard sales, I've never found any store that has retro stuff to ever be a good deal, ebay is almost always cheaper. Which is sad, because I would like to be able to go into a real store and buy more than what I do, but seems like the only time its even worth it if some sort of sale is going on. If not, its just a bunch of over priced games, or sports games. I live in TN though.

I agree... I am fortunate to have a huge outside flea market in my area.
It's cheap, I don't have to deal with bumbling store employees, and It's the only place I've ever found a prototype in the wild...

I haven't been to one in awhile myself, I need to start visiting them again to see if I can find anything in my area.

Isn't NYC home for NCSX ? I've bought stuff from them a few times. Shipping was killer and customs was a rip off but neither were their fault. They sometimes have obscure/old/leftovers from past on their stock so the chances of finding something interesting and *sealed new* exists...

I asked NCS if they had a retail location when I went home in 2006 and they indicated that they didn't do direct sales to the public out of a store. They recommended J&L Trading on Elizabeth Street, which is an impressive store with disappointingly high pricing. But any game in the world you might want is probably in stock. I walked out of there with Ogre Battle 64 and some Saturn rarity I can't remember at the moment.

I'm going to NYC soon, and would like to have a look around these stores:

Video Games New York (East 6th St), Video Games Central (Howard Beach) & 8 Bit and Up (St Mark's Place).

Anyone know if any of these are no longer open?

I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure the St.Marks Place is long gone. Haven't been there in years though, the prices were stupid.

When I went to NYC a few years ago I found a cool little import game shop in Chinatown. I can't remember what it was called or where it was. They had Saturn games, Neo Geo games, N64 games, etc. Most of it seemed pretty overpriced, but I thought it was cool simply because I'd never seen so much imported stuff in one place before.

It was probably J&L Game Trading.

Here's their "website" (not much of one)

    http://www.jnlgame.com/

I go there every time I'm in the city. They generally ARE overpriced, but sometimes they have stuff marked down way cheaper than I'd be able to get it on eBay. For instance, I once walked out of there with a ton of mint/complete/boxed JPN N64 games for like $8-10 each. I bought like a dozen.

    It's worth visiting, IMO.
