Hi everyone, So, two years ago, I saw this game for sale on Yahoo JP Auctions. I passed on it at the time and subsequently regretted it. Two years later, I have never seen it for sale since and I'm struggling to find any information about it on the Internet in general. So, does anyone know anything about what this version of Ridge Racer is actually like? Also, if someone were to know the serial number, that would be awesome. Here's a pic. Sorry it's not so great, it's the only one I have.
Cool find! I don't own it but this would be a nice piece of PS history to have. The product ID is PAPX-90001, probably the first public demo disc for the Playstation. By the way, there's a thread on this very forum with a better pic: http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/playstation-15th-anniversary-usa.28926/ On a side note: it reads 爆走プレーステーション (Bakusou Playstation, bakusou = high speed) above the game title. That seems to be the name of Sony's campaign to promote the system at that time. There are a couple of commercials and promo videos online with that title.
Only thing i could find was this: http://page8.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/h180522363 My guess it's a trial disc, probably with no gameplay and just a video. As for the name, it could be the name used during development.
You have better eyes than I do, Johnny. I went through the current listings too but didn't notice the "Grand Prix" in there. So, early promo material... If they wanted to use the "Grand Prix" in the title they most probably had to ditch it in order to avoid confusion with Motor Toon Grand Prix which came out two weeks after the console's launch. But why have it in the first place on the promo materials? The demo disc must have been available (very) shortly before or after the official launch, right?
Thanks very much for the information, guys! I think it was actually Edward_V12's auction which I saw over on Yahoo two years ago. I hope that another one will come up for sale one day. I always thought this demo disc might just be a standalone version of the Hi-Spec demo that came with RR Type 4, so it's great to learn what an early demo this is. I wonder if there are any changes between this and the Arcade and PS versions...
It wasn't really a case of better eyes. I just searched for Ridge Racer and opened every single auction that had a picture of the artwork from the first game.
