The journalist and presenter Alan Whicker has died of pneumonia, aged 87.

He joined the BBC in 1957 as a reporter, working on Tonight. However, he was most famous for his own show, Whicker's World, which ran from 1959 to 1988. He was a shareholder in Yorkshire Television and helped launch it in the Eighties, transferring the production of Whicker's World to them from the BBC. He was awarded the CBE is 2005 for services to broadcasting. He was parodied in a Monty Python sketch, Whicker Island, where the Python team all mimicked him. He continued to make television appearances until recently, including narrating The Comedy Map of Britain.

RIP Alan - you were a first class presenter and piqued my interest in World affairs at an early age.
