Computer pioneer Douglas Engelbart has died aged 88. He is best known as the inventor of the mouse. However, his accomplishments in early computing were numerous. Here are just a few things Douglas either pioneered, or at least had something to do with their development: Miniaturization of electronic components Hypermedia / hypertext Groupware Video conferencing Shared files ARPANET (predecessor to the Internet) Networking Windows-based GUI Raster scan monitors Word processing e-mail DMA Ranked search results A lot of the above was implemented through his revolutionary NLS computer collaboration system, which later became Augment. And that's not mentioning over 20 patents that he created including glow discharge devices and magnetic-core logic circuits. He believed that computers could be used to augment human intellect. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-23174052 RIP Douglas. Thanks for all your contributions to us progressing into the digital age. A true pioneer.
