Actor Francis Matthews has died, aged 86.

Matthews was best known for playing the voice of the lead character in Gerry Anderson's Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. He also played the lead role in Paul Temple, one of BBC1's first colour series (BBC2 broadcast in colour first). He also had small roles in many television series from the 1950s through to this century, often as a bad guy. Francis also acted in films, including Hammer films such as The Revenge of Frankenstein, Dracula: Prince of Darkness and Rasputin: The Mad Monk. He also worked with Morecambe and Wise in film and on television.

Coincidentally, his last regular appearance in a series was All About George, starring Rik Mayall.

RIP Francis - a great actor and a lovely man. Thanks for some great roles, not least Captain Scarlet.
