The actor, screenwriter, director and author Gene Wilder has died aged 83 from complications associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Wilder started treading the boards, but had a part in Bonnie and Clyde. He was seen on stage by Mel Brooks, with whom he would work extensively, on films such as The Producers, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. He also became known for working with Richard Pryor in Silver Streak, Stir Crazy and See No Evil, Hear No Evil. However, he was best known for the lead role in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

RIP Gene. You were a huge part of my childhood - an actor I admired from an early age. Thanks for some hilarious and magical films.

This is sad. Loved Gene Wilder in everything he did. He was also in so many great movies that as a kid and teen really made me pay attention.

An amazingly talented actor and comedian. He's left this Earth, but like all true greats, his legacy is immortal.

    RIP.
