The composer James Horner is reported to have died after one of his planes crashed yesterday, aged 61. Although the pilot and sole person on board has not been formally identified, his assistant appears to have confirmed that he died.

From his early films such as Star Trek II, 48 Hours and Krull, he quickly became an in-demand composer, scoring blockbusters including Cocoon, Commando, Aliens, An American Tail, Batteries Not Included, Willow, Field of Dreams, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Braveheart, Casper, Apollo 13, Jumanji, Titanic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Avatar and The Amazing Spider-Man... to name but a few!

RIP James - thanks for so much amazing music, and sparking my lifelong love of film scores.
