The comedienne, actress, writer, television host and producer Joan Rivers has died aged 81, following complications of surgery.

Rivers started her career doing stand-up comedy in New York clubs. She wrote jokes and was the "bait" on Candid Camera in the 1960s. She regularly appeared on entertainment shows such as The Tonight Show and Celebrity Squares, and hosted The Late Show starring Joan Rivers in the Eighties, which led to her being banned from The Tonight Show until this year. She has appeared in films such as The Muppets Take Manhattan, Spaceballs, Look Who's Talking, Shrek 2 and Iron Man 3.

She was the first female talk show host and the first female comedian to perform at Carnegie Hall.

RIP Joan - you may not have been everyone's cup of tea and were certainly controversial, but I thank you for your contribution to the industry - some very enjoyable moments.
