Just wanted to say what a big shock this was, and a great loss. He really was a truly unique person. Such a big influence in the British music industry, and discovered many good bands. He truly cared, more than anyone in the industry it seems.

I even know people in other countries who know of him, that's how influential his work was!

It is a sad day. My condolences go to his family. :smt009

What music do you guys listen to? Two of my favorite bands both had a Peel Sessions CD. New Order, and The Cure. Don't listen to them that much now though.

I do feel sorry for the guy dying. Its just that since I didn't know him, his death wasn't that big of a deal. [sarcasm]Like Christopher Reeve[/sarcasm].

Anyway, when Roy Atkins, if thats the correct name, he's the guy who played as Bean on Mr. Bean. When he dies EVERYBODY will cry.

His name is Rowan Atkinson and Mr. Bean is one of his more poorer characters I'd say. He'll be best remembered as Black Adder in the UK and Mr. Bean everywhere else.

Yeah funny how nobody cared about Mr Reeve until his accident, then forgot about him again until he died.

When Rowan Atkinson dies, it will be a world-wide event, Mr Bean and Blackadder re-runs for the following 6 months (not a bad thing).

Let's not forget his minor role in that Bond movie, now *that* was a stark contrast to his usual roles :)

Anyways, Back onto John Peel rather than Rowan Atikinson, This is Really sad, He really was a pillar of good music - He played what was good, Not What he was told was good. Brought some of the 60s/70s pirate radio ethos to Radio1. Truly a sad day for music.

It is funny to see how many people not from the UK know of him, through either coming to the UK and hearing his show, or the Peel Sessions albums that were often made. They were taken from his live radio sessions that many bands performed.

As for Rowan Atkinson (or Roy Atkins :smt082), he also had a small part in Tomb Raider, just to keep the topic slightly video game related too ;-)

Without John Peel, we wouldn't have had many bands. The Undertones are sure that he got them noticed, The Smiths too. Then there's people like T-Rex, Pulp... to name just a few from several generations and differing genres. A true legend, he will be missed. Oh, and his radio show was top notch :smt023 very funny and informative :)
