I'm no fan of the current administration, but this is the alternative: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wT9XS_TvzQ "You're not saying anything, Tony." Accurate on so many levels. Sack the lot I reckon.
It's stupid, let's tell the miners to fuck off, and then add ANOTHER tax. How can people pay and afford taxes when they have their job taken away? GST, that the unemployed and employed pay and taxes the employed pay. Want any more money?! Since you're in Brisbane, not sure you heard this but many many moons ago, the government wanted to spend 2 million dollars to light up the westgate bridge. 2 MILL! It was probably more. What the fuck? Use that 2 million on hospitals, fund the paramedics, increase pay for the police officers. Build more hospitals, not spend 2 mil on fucking lights! Who would pay the carbon tax on those? Honestly the carrot top bitch is stupid, so the other clown. We're screwed, there's nothing good left. Wish Rudd was never kicked off now.
Oh shit I had forgotten about that..... We are fucked either way..... The government (here) should be trying to force the Aussie dollar down like all other countries. We need to get shit moving out of here not into it. Rudd was/is a top bloke, but don't think he is "tough enough" wants to be everyone's friend (eg the 2 lot's of handouts he had). But he took everything in his stride, do you remember the finger in the ear and what does it taste like incident? He got paid out on Rove and just loll'ed it off. Isn't the government giving the movie people $20 million to do 10000 leagues under the sea? And that poli' cut sick saying "how about that medical equipment for the hospital I asked for?" What the movie folk don't have the money? To borrow a line from Tony Abbott "That's Bullshit".
I don't remember that at all, but Rudd was more laid back. People were still finding shit to bitch about him, he's flying places, he went to strip club etc. However he never made stupid choices like extra taxes or anything. I don't care if he doesn't seem like the Terminator to other countries or the general public, he was a good PM. I wouldn't be surprised mate, most likely. I thought this country was lucky? There's people dying in waiting lists, yet they are happy to throw $20 million at a film? Get fucked...
Hear, hear! Edit: Margaret Thatcher was before my time and wrong country. But I cannot help chuckling at Abbott... :highly_amused:
You might want to read more from sources that are a little more neutral and reliable. Factual errors and hyperbole aren't really helpful even if they are "interesting" or entertaining to read. A common misconception and not entirely accurate, she was personally against "stopping milk for school children"; to clarify 'free' milk was no longer to be provided for children between the ages of 7 to 11. To be honest, Thatcher took the flak for a decision that had, for all intents and purposes, already been made for her by the Treasury. The casualty figures are incorrect. Wikipedia puts the Argentine figure at 649 and the British at 258. You can't blame Thatcher for the way our first past the post voting system works and the fact it can produce massive majorities. 42% is a large share by our standards, Blair beat it slightly in 1997 but we haven't seen 40%+ since. Also, turnout was higher in all the elections she fought; 1979, 1983 and 1987. The way it works at present is actually skewed so that it benefits Labour and completely shafts any third party in the race. Labour can get 35% of the vote and win 355 seats whereas the Tories get 32% and win 198 seats. Margaret Thatcher didn't perform a U-turn on the 'Community Charge', her steadfast refusal to drop it was one of the reasons she was "stabbed in the back". It was replaced, after she had resigned, by John Major. If she had taken the wholly sensible decision to drop the policy then things may well have turned out differently. By this point in time she probably thought herself infallible... Similar to above, British Rail was actually privatised by John Major in 1993 after the 1992 general election. Thatcher wasn't an MP at this point, in fact she would have been arguing about Europe (what else did she do there?) in the House of Lords. This is also incorrect. Geoffrey Howe's resignation speech was what prompted Michael Heseltine to finally make his move for the leadership, triggering the leadership contest. Thatcher resigned after speaking to members of the cabinet individually (Howe wouldn't be one of these as he'd already resigned.) and being told she would most likely lose, probably badly, and the damage her continuing to the second round of the contest could do. If she'd received four more votes in the first round a second ballot would not have been necessary, it really was that close. I'm not sure who wrote the list but it would seem they themselves need a history lesson about Thatcher and her successor. There's plenty of stuff that she actually did do to disagree strongly with so there really is no need to add stuff she wasn't responsible for or fudge figures.
I heard UK still suffers from politicians with similar goals but british people gave parties and watched the "Ding Dong the Witch is dead" video from 1939 "The wizard of Oz".
parties were had, had a beer myself. the split in opinion is down to the communities and areas that thatcher and her government affected for the worse. alot still living with the consequences / fallout
Hum I wasn't around for her regime, but you don't need to have been there to see the disastrous effects of her damaging policies. In the end, her death at this point doesn't change anything, well except for presenting another opportunity for our supposedly broke government to hand out masses of money to undeserving causes it while shafting the disabled.... Oh and another distraction so people spend all their time arguing about the past rather than.. ya know focusing the despair and hopelessness facing them in the present. I won't be celebrating but I'm not going to pretend that I am sad about the death of a woman who smashed the glass ceiling in such a way that it rained razor sharp pieces of glass all over the faces of any other women who may wish to be prime minister. Oh and by the way, anyone who describes Tony Blair as "on the left" has clearly been reading too many tabloids. Aside from the odd gem he was a centre right politician at best, perhaps he looked all fluffy and left compared to the Tory government before him but then so would anybody. I'm a card carrying member of the labour party but I was happy to see the back of him. Mind you I'm only a labour party member because I'm hoping that Ed will turn out to be the son of his father, not looking good for that so far :/.
Which isn't cited. (no [x]) Wikipedia is a good place to find information but you HAVE to check the citations. As somebody who wasn't alive during that time and hasn't done enough research frankly I can't conclude on whether she was a shit prime minister or not. I'll go with what Simon Weston said. She was a decisive leader and you could be certain of what she was doing, not like the PM's we have now who go back on key rallying cries.
Indeed, you should always check your facts. In this case, one of the references has a casualty list for each unit involved, it just happens to be cited later on in the article rather than the info box (see [93]), and there is also separate page listing them on Wikipedia itself (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentine_ground_forces_in_the_Falklands_War). Besides, there are numerous other sources, Argentine and British, that confirm the 649 figure. Trust me, I did check before responding yesterday evening. I was really trying to figure out where the 3000 figure came from, it's just over three times the total number killed on both sides which is why it stood out so much. I was four when she left office so I have no strong feelings either way - there seems to be the accepted notion that you either loved or hated her which evidently isn't true - I just like accuracy. When people make lists like the one posted the cherry-picking of facts and the inclusion of dubious statistics is de rigueur.
it's funny how the US got bashed by outsiders for being insensitive, parading and celebrating when Osama was killed. Yet now that this politician who's known more for ripping people off of ice cream than ordering mass-murder is considered so evil that people can openly parade and celebrate this woman's death, who probably suffered more than Osama did anyways.
Yep, there's a lot of misinformed anti-Thatcher propaganda going around. The school dinners thing is bullshit - I was at school during her reign and burgers and chips was a rarity. Plenty of cabbage, veg etc! As for milk, agreed it was already decided... and it wasn't exactly a big deal for parents. GIVE YOUR KIDS A BOWL OF CEREAL A DAY FFS! Milk was about 20p a pint back then! Regardless of what you think of a political leader's abilities at their job, wishing them dead over 20 years after they left that job is harsh. Especially as most of the people are too young to have been directly affected by her decisions at the time. And if you weren't, why the hell did you keep voting for her if you didn't like her?! She was the longest serving Prime Minister since 1827! Obviously she did something right - it's just her opponents have louder voices.
Not exactly the best stance to take. In deprived areas there are kids that eat 1 meal a day and even then it's their free school meals. When the economy is in the toilet (and even when its not) people can't afford man, fuck.
Well maybe people should stop paying for a man fuck and buy their kids some milk instead? Back then, a pint of milk was nothing (in fact, in 1980 it wouldn't even have been 20p). Even back then, you got child support. Even the miners were still feeding their kids, regardless of their hardships.
disgusting prime minister, anyone with any decent morals or sense, who cares about the vulnerable in society was singing and dancing the day she died. anyone defending her makes me sick. current government also disgusts me.
Ding dong the witch is dead, except not really. Big Ben didn't ding dong, She wasn't a witch, so was a total fucking bitch, and she may be dead but sadly 'Thatcherism' isn't. Yes, with the death of Maggie comes the reminder that the current generation of politicians don't have any of her ability or charisma whatsoever so they will shit on us harder in a failed attempt to come close. Worse still, the lack of solid policies, piss poor ideas and generally a lackluster opposition means there will be more tough times ahead. In a word, the UK is fucked. The witch is dead. Long live the witch!
I have a feeling our current prime minister (rock on september!) will go down the same way as thatcher. I loved her motivational speech yesterday, along the lines of "whoops we put the country in defecit $12 billion" "now everyone will have to chip in". I can't wait until september comes....
