Reports are coming in that the actor Rik Mayall has died. He was 56. After setting up The Comic Strip with fellow comedians and producing a TV series under the name, he became well-known for his role in The Young Ones. He often appeared in shows with Adrian Edmonson, including Filthy, Rich and Catflap and Bottom. He also appeared in several films, most famously Drop Dead Fred. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-27770266 RIP Rik - you were a huge part in my appreciation of comedy growing up.
I can't believe this is true! He was an absolute comedy genius and one of my favourite comics of my generation. They (Rick and Adrian Edmonson) had once said that they didn't want to do another Bottom yet because neither of them were old enough nor grumpy enough to do it, I guess now that will never happen. RIP Rick! I'll have to do a marathon to remember him as I've never watched his work in such a long time. Hoggs of War anyone?
One of the very few true comic geniuses. To me, Bottom is still the funniest TV program ever - it's over twenty years old, and I know the scripts word for word, but whenever I watch it, as I do frequently, it always makes me laugh like an idiot. A very sad day for the world.
WTF! Rik Mayall, dead? At such a young age too. Anyone around in the 80's would know who Rik was. From the comic strip, the young ones and bottom to even telling stories on Jack-a-nory. He had so many characters from poor snivelling student to pompous sly PM Alan B'Stard in The New Statesman. So sad to see a man who had given so much laughter to the people of the UK and even the world (maybe). I'm just glad I got to see Bottom live 1 and 2 in my life. I laughed so hard my jaw was sore. EDIT. Just read Adrian Edmondson's comment for the BBC. So funny, just like they were when together. Rik would have liked this comment. Edmondson added: "There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. "And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard."
I really can't believe it, so shocked to hear it! My parents were both huge fans so I was introduced to The Young Ones, Bottom and many other British comedy shows when I was little and I still rate Drop Dead Fred in my top favorite films after all of this time! Argh. When I get back to Australia, we have to do a marathon of his work!
yeah i watched the young ones all the time back in the early 80s, my favorite show back then, those four guys were hilarious.
