The writer, producer, director, philanthropist and lesser-known co-creator of The Simpsons, Sam Simon, has died aged 59 after losing his battle with colon cancer.

Simon started his career as a storyboard artist, working on shows such as Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids and The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse and Heckle and Jeckle before scriptwriting for the likes of Taxi and Cheers. However, his best-known work is The Simpsons. Despite Matt Groening being known as the creator, Simon thought up several characters and introduced certain methods of working from the start. Despite leaving the show in 1994, he remained Executive Producer, bringing him a sizeable income.

He then created the Sam Simon Foundation, a charity which rescues sheltered dogs due to be euthanized and trains them to work with disabled people. He left all his money to charity.

RIP Sam - thanks for bringing us a legendary show with a meticulous attention to detail that really brought the best out of everyone who worked on the production. And all your charity work.
