The actor Sir John Hurt, CBE has died aged 77 after losing his battle with cancer.

Hurt's acting career started in the Sixties, soon landing a major part in A Man for All Seasons. He went on to appear in 10 Rillington Place in the Seventies and was notable in the television series I, Claudius. Whilst he voiced characters in popular cartoon adaptations of Watership Down and Lord of the Rings at the end of the decade and appeared in Alien, his supporting character in Midnight Express earned him an Oscar nomination and he won a Golden Globe and BAFTA in the same category.

The Eighties brought his last Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for The Elephant Man, and his last BAFTA for a role. He appeared in Spaceballs and voiced a character in The Black Cauldron and was The Storyteller in Jim Henson's show of the same name. Notable Nineties films include King Ralph and Contact. He also voiced characters in two video games - Privateer 2: The Darkening and Tender Loving Care.

Probably one of his most famous roles came in the 21st century - that of Mr. Ollivander in the Harry Potter films. Other films include The Skeleton Key, V for Vendetta and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Another voice part was heard in the BBC show Merlin. He also provided a missing link between the old and new series of Doctor Who by portraying The War Doctor.

Whilst often overlooked in industry ceremonies, Hurt received a CBE in 2004. 11 years later, he was knighted. A few years before, in 2012, he received a BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema.

RIP Sir John. Another great, classical British actor sadly gone. Thanks for some great characters.

Sad news already =/ Will always remember the small part he had on Spaceballs, when the movie jokes about Alien.

Also, he was great in Recount and Contact.
