The production designer Sir Ken Adam, OBE has died aged 95 after a short illness. Born in Germany to Jewish parents, Adam's family relocated to London five years before the Second World War broke out. After designing bomb shelters for the Pioneer Corps, he was accepted into the RAF Volunteer Reserve - making him one of only three German RAF pilots. After the war, he began working on films, soon racking up credits such as Dr. No, Dr. Strangelove, Sleuth and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He designed the car for the latter, and worked on many Bond films - his volcano lair set for You Only Live Twice being particularly memorable. He won Academy Awards for Best Art Direction/Set Decoration for The Madness of King George and Barry Lyndon. Ken donated all his production drawings to the Deutsche Kinemathek a few years ago and they have been displayed in exhibitions in Germany. Really beautiful pieces. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-35780260 RIP Ken. Thanks for so many amazing, memorable film sets.
