Sir Patrick Moore has died aged 89.

Moore was best known for his record-breaking television show The Sky At Night. The show ran for over 45 years with Moore presenting every episode, making it the World's longest running television programme with the same presenter - a feat that will surely be difficult to beat. Whilst he was best known as an astronomer, he was also a talented musician and composer, playing both xylophone and piano.

Of course, to many of us here, he may be best remembered as The GamesMaster from the popular British video game-related television series, the first of its kind in this country.

RIP Sir Patrick - you inspired many of us to pursue an interest in astronomy.

I leave you with Patrick playing xylophone:

    R.I.P. Sir Patrick Moore

I think people from the UK here will agree that a legend has passed.

    Wiki,

The Sky at Night is a monthly documentary television programme on astronomy produced by the BBC. The show had the same permanent presenter, Sir Patrick Moore, from its first airing on 24 April 1957 until his death on 9 December 2012, making it the longest-running programme with the same presenter in television history.
The programme covers a wide range of general astronomical and space-related topics. In the past, general topics have included stellar life cycles, radio astronomy, artificialsatellites, black holes, neutron stars and many others. The programme also covers what is happening in the night sky at the time it is being broadcast, especially when something less common, such as a comet or a meteor shower, is present.

I always tried to catch this show, and have fond memories of going out into the garden with my dad when I was a kid looking for things in the sky on Sir Patricks recommendation.

Gamers will probably best remember him from the Channel 4 series The Games Master, in which he would often appear as The GamesMaster in pre-recorded videos during the show offering tips and cheats to kids having trouble with certain games. I absolutely loved The GamesMaster, it was the only decent show about games on TV at the time ('92 - '98), it showed previews of upcoming games and reviewed the latest games. I very rarely missed it and it holds a very special place in my heart from when I was growing up.

It is a very sad day indeed.

Oh shit! Can't believe it, he was certainly getting old but his death comes at a surprise. RIP Games Master!

I quite liked The Sky at Night, it was probably my most loved program that I never watched lol, could never remember when it was on.

I think everyone in the UK knew who Sir `Patrick Moore was even if they weren't in to games or astronomy. He really was a special man if not a little eccentric every now and then.

    EDIT - I've merged retro's and C-Rocks threads together.
