DEVICE PROGRAMMER: Often referred to as "burners," device programmers are used by technicians and advanced hobbyists to perform ROM dumps and ROM "burns." A dump is taking an existing ROM image and using the programmer to transfer it to another media such as magnetic disk. A burn is the reverse: taking a stored ROM image and writing it to a blank chip can i somehow combine that with http://versuscolors.com/ to have the new colors on real hardware? i'm guessing the answer is no, but i thought i'd ask
A CPS2 copier? The answer is OF COURSE YOU CAN, you just need to find blank ROMs the size of the originals on the board. If all these patches only change game palettes, they should only alter the program ROMs. CPS2 games probably use 1Mx16 and 2Mx16 DIP program ROMs, so suitable replacement EPROM would be 27C160 and 27C322. You will need a 16-bit programmer though. Many of the cheaper ones (Willem and clones) won't support 16-bit without an adapter; and the Willem adapter is half the cost of the main programmer. Expect to pay at least $100 for a 16-bit programmer. BTW, 27C160/322 are relatively expensive, expect $5-10 a ROM. Depending on how many ROMs need patching, you could possibly spend $20 per patched game. If you don't already have the programmer, you'll have to ask yourself if $100+ for a palette swap is worth it...
I agree with Calpis, you're gonna spend an awful lot of money for a palette swap? That's rather wasteful. There's alot of better things to do with ROM Programmers. Makes me wish the one I got worked. ='( But I guess that's what I get for trying to go cheap.
hmm if i could get a hold of one of those programmers, would copying the files be difficult? and lemme guess, i'd have to desolder the old ones and resolder the new ones- probably killing the board. wouldn't it fail those diag tests run before the game starts too? better things? like what?
CPS2 ROMs are in sockets on the PCB board. You can simply remove them from the socket and read them with an appropriate programmer and software. And actually CPS2 Program ROMs are EPROMs, so you could erase them and rewrite them with the hack assuming they are the same region as your board. I.E. if the color hacks are for the US version and you have a US board, it would work. But I advise against erasing your original program ROMs if you board is in working order. I had my Marvel Super Heroes Vs Street Fighter program ROMs erased and reprogrammed because the board was dead and I had the "Phoenix Edition" programmed on them. Better things for using a ROM programmer would be things like building your own SNES or Genesis cartridges. Or some really big hack, more than just a few colors changed.
