With RPGs clocking in at 50-100 hours (more if it happens to have Elder and Scrolls in it's name) Buying the wrong one can be a huge time wasting mistake. I'm new to RPGs the scope of the ones I've been playing remind me why I avoided them in the first place but you can't have a PS2 with out a few RPGs so I nabbed a few acclaimed ones Persona 3, Wild Arms 5, and Star Ocean til the end of times, I have FFX but I have no intention of ever playing it I got it just for the sake of owning it incase it gets FF VII like expensive. I hated Dragon Warrior the first one which Nintendo gave away with Nintendo Power subscriptions. I also was reading up on the older personas and was saddened by the fact that when they localized the first game they LOCALIZED the first game as in dejapanized it. So to save me time and possibly money (since RPGs can get rare and expensive esp the good ones) Which ones should I stay away from at all costs?
I don't think I've played a single RPG on PS2. All I'm aware of that exists are the Final Fantasy, Star Ocean 3, and uh well that's it. Are there really that many RPGs? I've hardly ever heard much of any. One other came to mind, Xenosaga or something like that. I only know of it cause supposively it's on a DVD9.
I get a strong urge to play pretty much any RPG thrown at me, but It's been AGES since I finished one, with the jobs and masters thesis and all ... and then the laser on the PSTwo died, so it won't start up the battle sequences on Star Ocean Till the End of Time. Right now, I need to finish Eternal Sonata, Dragon Quest VIII (yes, it's almost been two years...), and about a metric fuckload of others. I generally avoid american made RPGs (boy, am I going to catch flak for that comment) - but I hear even some of those are great. I couldn't bring myself to finish Disgaea or Makai Kingdom, though. La Pucelle is a bit more forgiving, but even that one is halfway through at the moment. It's just such a drag to have to powerlevel to just get to the next fucking map. I'll just whip out the old DS and get my FFVI on, you know? I'd say avoid all those that imply too much useless levelling up.
WRPGs are a LOT different from JRPGs Morrowind is a good WRPG, but it can be modded like crazy to your personal tastes. I want to get Daggerfall and Eye of the Beholder, as well as a few other WRPGs. And yeah, all those NIS JRPGs require to grind. A LOT. Disgaea has a Saturday morning cartoon plot, basically, and the gameplay is somewhat repetitive. And you need to grind for 2000+ hours (not joking) to beat the optional boss. Disgaea is the only one I've finished, and I used a gameshark to beat the optional boss, because I'm not insane. Its all a matter of taste, really, though. For me, I don't recommend: Those two Arc the Lad games for the PS2 (Even though I loved the first ones on the PSX) Lunar - GBA version (Watered down version of Lunar: SSSC) Lunar: Dragon Song - Havent played it yet, but I hear it really sucks Phantasy Star 3 - Boring AS HELL. The rest in the series are ok, imo. Chrono Cross - Gonna catch flak for this, but I hated it. 50+ characters and only a handful are useful. The story is really fucked up and makes no sense, either due to mistranslation, a billion time paradoxes, or both. Wild Arms 2 - Overall it was mediocre. I agree 100% with Gamespots review, actually. Its like they read my mind. Cima: The Enemy - Imagine an escort mission. With 20+ characters to escort at a time. Yeah. KOTOR - Not nearly as awesome as everyone makes it out to be. I didn't like the turn based combat much. I think thats pretty much it.
To me, a lot of the PS2 and such newer RPG's just bore me. I don't think they'll ever be as fun as they were on PSX and Saturn. I got to say, one NOT to avoid is Xenogears, which is still, to this day, my favorite game ever.
Avoid them all, except ones on the Gameboy, DS or PSP so you can play them when you'd be doing nothing useful like sitting on a train, visiting other halfs parents, going to the toilet, having a bath, etc. This way you'll have more time to play real games. [runs away....]
I own the soundtrack and I love the game for it's depth in storyline. I also wish they left Citian's name as SHITan. plus the ending has bare asses!
I don't think it's a great idea to play a handheld while taking a bath. I don't know if it'd do as good of a job as a toaster does, but it atleast won't help the handheld any. I really have a hard time playing RPGs that are "grinders" where you kill misc random enemys 18 billion times only to find out you needed to kill another 57 billion to get strong enough to kill some boss. It's just boring.
Same here, I do think thats the best a game storyline has ever been. I got that game in 5th grade, and it strikes up a lot of good memories.
Avoid Lunar Dragon Song...I enjoyed Lunar Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue...hell I even enjoyed Lunar Legend on GBA just because I could reminisce of my time playing SSSC on the PSX, however Dragon Song is just not right....it does not feel right...it does not have that 'magic' of the series (for lack of better description).
Elitist much? I like most of those titles, except 8, 10, 10-2, and 11. I like the first FF the most, as its the closest to D&D, therefore, it focuses on gameplay and imagination rather than having a plot. FF5 is basically FF1 with a plot and the ability to change classes.
I've always thought they were worth checking out at least, but not the best. I still need to try 12. 8 however, is another favorite RPG of mine. For some reason that game won me over.
I m not elitist. I ve REALLY tried to get into them (especially FF7) but for some reason i lose interest. They don't really hold me and once I turn off the console I can't really say that "i crave" to resume play. I think they re overly dramatic and lacking humour. On the flip side, i m a huge fan of Super Mario RPG , and its semi-sequel on the GBA/DS. Paper Mario 1 and 2 are also favourites. Of course, I m a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE fan of Terranigma and Chrono Triger on the SNES. oh! and let's not forget the Japan-only Captain Tsubasa. I ve finished both 1 and 2 on the NES(Famicom actually) and I thought they were fucking amazing. The 3 SNES sequels by Tecmo are also great (especially the last one) but I m kinda lost regarding the story-line. Do we have any followers of the above games here?speak up so I don;t feel alone! PS: Naturally, I m a huge fan of Panzer Dragoon Saga and many other RPGs , including Pokemon (Yellow, not the subsequent, Phantasy Star series, Shinning series (the Holy Ark yey!) , Legacy of Kain: Blood omen and many many others
All the Shining Force GBA games are shit aside from Resurrect. Same goes for the Lunar GBA games. Some like Robotrek, but I think it gets old quick. Breath of Fire series took a dive after III, so probably avoid those. Tecmo Secret of the Stars is tremendously bad. Hylide games = crap. I really can't understand who was buying enough of their games for them to keep pumping out remakes and sequels. Twinbee RPG I really wanted to like but it falls pretty flat. Quest 64 was a turd. Even though I enjoyed it, alot of people hate Beyond the Beyond. I could probably go on forever...
I am a huge fan of Terranigma as well as Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia. I am currently playing these games again -- in order. Currently playing Soul Blazer then I'll move through the other games :icon_bigg
I never gave it a chance for that very reason... Something about FF just lost me after 6.. It was the hand drawn graphics that kept me enchanted. I think for that reason, the SNES was the golden era of RPGs for me. Some how I made it through FF7 though, which was a struggle, but 8 was complete garbage and I never gave 9+ a chance at all. Top 5 for me: Chrono Trigger Secret of Mana Final Fantasy 6 Illusion of Gaia Breath of Fire
