Taken from here. Nothing really shocking. I was expecting more ram if I were to be honest – on both the GPU and the mainboard.
Having mad RAM is just in vogue.. I think you're crazy for suggesting that 384 mebi *freaking* bytes isn't enough. In my opinion they should do away with the DRAM altogether, DRAM is stupid and having so much RAM only encourages (or doesn't discourage) inefficient coding.
but Nintendo has previously said that Revolution will work with PC monitors as well as televisions that is good news
Yep, as long as VGA is support is in there then we've got nothing to worry about I think the specs are pretty nice. Yeah, they're not out of this world but to be perfectly honest can you expect to see much difference is terms of graphical quality without really looking for it in the new up coming generation? Yakumo
Well, maybe the SRAM acts partly as display memory as the gfx controller has only 12mb, and the DRAM is used for code & data? That makes more sense than an UMA, imho.
If that were the case, I'd use SRAM for the code/data and DRAM for display memory. But still, what's the need for 128mb/256mb video memory? Afterall 640x480x32bpp isn't 12mb. Just what is the memory holding? XD
I'd wager the ram with the tier 1 commands will probably be used for emulation more than anything else.
Yes, If emulating a big N64 Game, one of the 512 mbit carts (can't remember which they are, but I'm sure someone will) You'll need at least 64Mbytes for the cart in RAM, As well as up to 8 for the N64 RAM.It could all build up, particularly if say you can be listening to music or something at the same time, It can all add up.
Kyuusaku, Play UT 2k4. It has no advance display effects. It's just pure high res textures and particles. The game when running takes up 512MB of ram to run. A huge section where Console games are not as visualy nice as PC games is not enough memory for textures.
I suggested textures before I edited my post. I realize that textures are the answer for PC games since PC hardware is pretty generic and PC developers are frightened by resource limits (etc etc) but the Revolution should be plenty fast enough to do PS2-esque "streaming" very well.
