Bump! Anyone willing to borrow me an RGB cable for testing? I live in Sweden and I'll happily pay for shipping to from me! Also I can install FreeMcboot on your ps2 memory card for free
Some regions in Asia were colonized by the British so it had PAL-B as primary video system. And due to strong SEGA presence from Japan, they had Mega Drive units sold at places like Hong Kong that while were set into "domestic mode" (Japan) had the video output configured for 50Hz. That's the reason why the MEGA-CD units sold in Asia had a "PAL-COMPATIBLE" Japanese MEGA-CD BIOS.
OK, so you're saying that the four-mode switch is for US/EU/JP/ASIA and the two-mode switch is for Pal 50Hz/NTSC 60Hz? Btw, I know I'm looking like a beggar but, do you happen to have a spare rgb cable I could borrow? I'll pay for the shipping back and forth
they're jumpers two bits make up for four possible configurations. Genesis 60Hz (USA) Genesis 50Hz (European Mega Drive) Mega Drive 60Hz (Japanese Mega Drive) Mega Drice 50Hz (Pal 50Hz Asia areas like Hong Kong)
Ok. So last week I went to a local retro videogame shop (turns out we have one over here) and asked them to test my console. Apparently it's either incompatible with my only game or the game itself is broken. Once they hooked it up through composite it said something like "this game is only compatible with PAL consoles" while in US mode, which is funny because it just gave a black screen on ALL regions except for US. Then we tested an EU Tale Spin cartridge and it worked in EU mode (U/D is what it says on the switch), although with minor stripes moving across the screen. In the three other modes it said that it's only playable on a UK console. So far so good, so I get the mega drive 2 composite cable and the jungle book cartridge. Back home the stripes are there and what's worse the sound is 95% distorted with loud noise. Could it have something to do with the fact that we have PAL B/G over here while the rf unit says PAL D, suggesting the console also is PAL D..? The stripes are there even without a cartridge, as long as the console is powered on. So I don't know what I should do. Thinking of buying a new clone online..
So.. The loud noise is coming from the right/red audio channel and that's because the console outputs only mono. It can be modded to output both stereo and rgb, I've seen it done on russian sites, but that's too hard of a job for me. Also vertical stripes are still there. And finally, it turns out the power supply was dying. It's now completely dead. Basically the console itself works with some minor but clearly visible video noise (the stripes) and some audio noise (same as the original md2 has). I guess this is the end of this story for now. There's a new md2 clone arriving at my mailbox soon so I'll be playing that instead.
There's a chance that European games will refuse to work on Asia console (Domestic or JPN/50hz video) and might even not put any message on the screen, just a black screen.
The weird thing is that, generally, EA cartridges, with the yellow EA tab on them, are supposed to be regionfree. However, this particular, Sweden exclusive, game is region locked and it works afer setting the console to pal eu mode.
