Is there any S-Video cables that are good for the Dreamcast? I don't know if I would want to go with a VGA box as some games don't work with it, and that kinda scares me. But the s-video cables are all cheap and have terrible reviews on amazon and ebay. Can I make my own? Is the VGA box not really going to make some games incompatible? My Dreamcast I got from ebay and it included one of those knock off composite cables. The picture quality is TERRIBLE! What can I do?
Most games work with it. Some do not, those that don't i think can be overridden by a boot disc, or installing a custom bios that bypasses the vga check and boots anyway http://www.dreamcast-talk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=82767#p82767 VGA cables work good too, no need for the box. But I'm unsure if there's a (noticeable) quality difference between the two, maybe someone could clear that up. But i think a cable and not a box is $12.95. You could also look into the option of RGB/SCART-->HDMI. Supposedly that's the best option. Though i don't see why VGA-->HDMI wouldn't be somewhat higher quality Hope that helps
I recommend skipping S-Video all together. Use VGA for the Dreamcast. If you run into a game that doesn't support VGA, use RGB SCART and a SCART to HDMI converter. RGB SCART is much better than S-Video but most of our American TVs don't support it without a converter. If you are into modded consoles, there is a Dreamcast HDMI mod coming out soon. It will be better than the native VGA output.
I just saw these weird conversion cables. So you basically take the video signal from composite and convert it to VGA. Would that upscale, or do absolutely nothing? http://www.ebay.com/itm/PC-VGA-SVGA...le-5FT-1-5M-/381313957228?hash=item58c8153d6c
No, they would not work. You need a Dreamcast VGA cable or VGA box. RGB SCART require a SCART to HDMI converter.
Essentially you'd just be upscaling the lower quality video as compared to VGA or SCART. It *might* look better than composite but that's not saying much compared to the quality of VGA or SCART. The outputs from VGA and SCART are higher fidelity outputs than composite to begin with
Most vga boxes that are actually boxes, including the official ones and the aftermarket clear ones, have both vga and svideo, and composite too. Honestly, most games work with vga and can be fixed to.
Yes the boxes are handy if you run across a game that doesn't support VGA, you just switch it to composite/svideo. Rather than plugging in another cable set. Also most MIL-CD versions of games that don't support VGA have the lockout overridden
you could also use the vga box that one of the members here made. It was made by beharius, and it is able to do vga in both 31/15 khz, so both vga and rgb. I have tested it with games such as gunbird 2, and it works like a charm. The only drawback is that you have to make sure your television set is able to support 15khz because I have a 32 in samsung hd tv and it does not do 15 khz whatsoever. I then tried it on one of my older monitor set ups which is NEC and it played it just fine.
Thanks, I purchased a Tomee VGA cable for $15 and a Stereo Splitter Adapter for $0.99 as my TV has a 1 jack in socket. I'll try that for a bit and see how it is. It was the only video cable I found decent reviews for. http://www.amazon.com/Tomee-Sega-VG...pebp=1441023530962&perid=1540NDA7DXNFW830BYN9
In the case of games that do not support VGA, what I would recommend is burning yourself a Codebreaker disc, and using that as a boot method. Codebreaker automatically tries to force VGA onto games that don't initially support it, thus doing the work for you.
