Well it's been long rumoured Sony will buy Visual Concepts to replace their woeful 989 sports. I don't think Sammy will have any use for them. From what I've heard there focus is on Pachinko and low end arcade machines.
Another thing I was thinking about was that it is quite probably the if Sammy start restricting AM2, Sonic Team etc we could see a lot of dev's leave.
A question hopefully someone can answer. If Naka were to leave would he take Sonic, Nights etc with him. Smae applies woth Suzuki. Would he take Virtua Fighter, Shenmue etc.
I guess we will just have to wait and see how Sammy handle Sega. If they start mass cancelling projects then we are doomed :smt009

    Yeah, this sucks.
If the devs leave, they really don't have the option of taking the characters with them, unless they pay the licensing fee -- and there's no way Sammy is going to let Sonic get out from under them. Shenmue they might be willing to ditch though.

Maybe they'll play their cards right (yeah right) and let the creative heads do what they've been doing better than anyone for the last XX years.

I'm suprised that Microsoft didn't buy them. They have over fifty billion in cash reserves. Sega would be a steal and would greatly boost their Xbox sales in Japan if Sega was exclusive.

I sure hope that Sammy don't turn Sega in to a Pachinko machine maker and cheap low spec arcade games maker. gaijinPunch, can you even grasp what it would be like with no Sega big names in the arcades in Japan? It would be like a load of Namco or Taito game center. Filled with crap :( Come on Sammy, let the big boys do what they want !! They know what they are doing unlike you :smt019

Take it easy. Sammy was the bigger sharesholder before, now they just did take over SEGA :p

Anyway, we should wait and see. I don't think Sammy will drop all SEGA's consoles plans. Just for use SEGA's brands on pachinko it's not a good excuse to buy SEGA.

This will be the scary part. Not only is Sega's biggest bucks coming from Arcade games, but you can bet their Arcades (Gigo, HiTech, Club Sega) are bringing in some bucks as well.

I'm really curious to see what Sammy does here. In Shibuya, you can throw a rock and hit a Sega arcade.... hope it stays that way.

In Taito\s defense though, Taito Station in Shibuya (across from HiTech) is a cool little arcade. They've got a handsome shooter section (mostly 32-bit), and if that's not your cup of tea, you can play the latest whatever right across the aisle.

The Taito center in Hakata (Fukuoka City) is massive but it's full of crap :( They do have a few good games but why bother when there's a 5 floor Sega Gio center over the road crammed full of the latest Sega goodies anmd other stuff from Konami, Capcom etc. We also have a Namco place but just like every other Namco game center I've seen, it's a load of poop. You just can't beat Sega when it comes to Arcades. I am a bit pissed that my local Sega World has no Out Run 2 yet the entire world seems to have it :smt022

Oh well, I still always have the retro game center in Kokura which is jam packed of classics from the mid 80's to Sammy's latest crap offerings. Have you seen their scrolling 3D beat'em up ? It's pathetic. No wonder it has been dumped upstairs with the retro stuff oh, and the fighting corner Tekken 4 fan boys :snipe:

I will miss seeing the sega name brand :( Hopefully they will still keep it intact and use it more than the Sammy name.

So THAT was their explosive announcement. All makes sense now with them publishing Matrix Online, etc.

Well, the one I was referring to isn't half bad. Yeah, it's got a lot of garbage, but they've got the basics too. 4-5 VF4:Evo machines, some Gundam vs Machines, the latest Sammy stuff (I like Dolphin Blue) and some retro. Overall, it's got a slightly better selection than the HiTech across the street, but is about twice the size.

The HiTech in Shibuya is the only one with a sizeable amount of older games. I usually just play VF when I'm there. Shibuya Gigo is mutli-floored, but is medicore only. Again, I usually only play VF there. They don't have ALL of the latest Sega games, but some. There's a very small retro corner, and is almost entirely filled with fighting games. Club Sega has a good representation of the latest thing, but very little retro. I think it's the samllest of the 3 Sega arcades in Shibuya. Go to the Shinjuku Sega arcades and it's a totally different story.

There's a Namco Inti right by Club Sega -- I only go there w/ non-gaming friends to play this cheesy Namco racing game. Race On I believe it's called - where it puts a picture of you on top of the car. My one mate usually takes a picture of half his ass-crack and races that way.

they woudn't want to anger former sega rivals EA.

EA sells more than any sega branded sports title.

Here's my thought... can't say much about Sammy, since I'd never heard of them before this whole buying-Sega thing...

... but think back of Konami and Treasure for a moment... the Treasure guys used to work for Konami but left because they wanted to be able to do things their own way... and I think we all agree that an impressive number of GREAT games for many systems came to be because of this. So even if Sega's AM2 people etc. end up leaving Sega/Sammy, who's to say they won't found a new gaming company and pull off the same thing? Turn out brandnew kickass games and such? I think the possibility is pretty exciting... :)

Ahwell, always look for the positive in everything, that's just me, I'm an optimist :)

Indeed... to be perfectly honest I'm more interested in the days when Sega developed for its own systems, but I do hope it turns out this way (or that Sammy will suck away the profit but not rape the franchises)

Er... Didn't they already do that long ago, with the Namco 2 arcade platform? :smt017 Or is this yet another one? Do you mean Atomiswave? Does it use a PowerVR chipset?
