So I have this Samsung SMT-C8340 DVR cable box. I would like to point out at the start that I OWN this device, I bought it from the store instead of paying a monthly fee of $20-30 something per month to rent it. I just moved a few days ago, and the cable company doesn't serve the area I now live in. I could sell the box to someone, open it up, recover the HDD and some parts and throw the rest away, or screw with it (more fun IMO). So when I packed the DVR, I noticed this port through the vent holes on top. Console port. I tried to Google it, found nothing, so I was hoping I could find someone who knows a thing or two about those kind of devices. They probably run a modified version of linux. I was wondering if that port was a service/debugging port. It also has a few unused ports at the back (Ethernet, USB, Firewire, e-Sata) and I hate seeing them and not being able to use them. I will try to connect it to my router and see if it gets assigned an IP address, or if the port is 100% disabled when I unpack my router in the next couple of days.
