TV: Samsung UN40D5500 running latest firmware (the issue existed with previous firmware version as well) Consoles: PS2 SCPH-39001 and PS3 CECH-3001A Background: Got the TV some years ago. Connected PS2 via Composite: everything working; then connected PS2 via Component: everything working. Connected PS3 via HDMI: everything working. All of a sudden, some months later, I tried the PS2 again, no picture or audio (either with Component or Composite). Tried PS3: same thing. Thought it was the composite/component cable; tried another one: same issue. Some time later, I got to try a VCR which worked fine via RCA. I also tried resetting the PS2 video mode (blindly, guided by several guides found online); no luck. Yesterday I got one of those cheapo composite/svideo to VGA box. I can see the menu of the VGA box, but still can't get picture from either console via Composite>VGA. I tried resetting the TV to factory settings, both from the main menu and from the Service menu; issue persists. I will during the weekend connecting the PS2 and PS3 with VGA box to a monitor I have and see how that goes. I'll also see if I can get a PS2 S-Video cable to try. In the meantime I thought I'd ask around here, in case someone can shed some light or provide feedback/suggestions. Just to clarify: I have no other TV to try the PS2/PS3 on. I have no other equipment that uses Composite or Component that I can try with the TV (the VCR was brought by a friend for a day and he lives far away). Thanks in advance.
Just out of curiosity, are you absolutely sure you're pushing the cable into the console all the way in? I had a cable that was really friggin tight to fit in my PS2... even after I thought it was in, I got no picture. I ended up needing to wiggle it a bit to get it in properly, which ended up working. Also, you didn't say if the HDMI cable was working still with your PS3?
I'm sure I did in the past, but now I got home and tried again, making sure the cables (tried 3 different cables) was going all the way in in the consoles, as well as in the TV / Monitor. I tried connecting both the PS2 and PS3 with all 3 cables to the monitor via the VGA box and no luck... at this point I'd assume the VGA box is malfunctioning, but I'm confused with the fact that neither consoles show image when connected directly to the TV. What are the odds that all 3 cables are broken, and/or that both consoles have the AV Multi Out port broken?
I just remembered I have the Component cable for PSP. So I went ahead and connected it, and that's working. Now I'm even more puzzled, though happy that my TV's component connector is working.
I've run into a problem like this before. I used to have a PS3 hooked up to an HD CRT and 2ch receiver via Component (1080i). It would usually run well, but then the TV would, at random, stop recognizing the signal. Even if I reset the PS3's video configuration to a barebones 480i, it refused to recognize it! The solution: There was an SD-only 480i component port on the TV that would recognize the signal once the PS3 was reset. I could fix it by go into the video settings, getting it setup to display 1080i, plugging it back into the HD component on the TV, and then pressing 'X' to confirm the resolution change. Every time that the PS3 force displayed the resolution, the TV would recognize the signal again! Of course, your situation is much different but here is an idea that might work! 1.) VCR -> TV (through RF instead of RCA). 2.) PS3 -> VCR (through the composite input on the VCR that I hope you have). 3.) Reset your PS3 to factory display settings (turn it on by holding down the power button for a handful seconds upon startup). You will hear the PS3 beep a couple seconds into holding the power button down. Hopefully, it will be displaying in 480i (doesn't support RF natively but it can be run over RF if it thinks it's outputting composite ) 4.) If all has worked so far, this is where it gets kinda weird. Turn off your PS3 and unplug the composite cables from the PS3 and the VCR. Get your component cables, plug the connector into the PS3, and plug the Green component cable into the Yellow composite input on the VCR (Red and White still being the same). You should hopefully, hopefully, get a Black and White image from the PS3. 5.) Go into the video settings The PS3 should now think it is outputting via component so it will give you the option to output in higher resolutions if you so desire (>480p). Get it set up to display in your TV's native resolution, but do not press X to confirm the resolution change yet! 6.) Now, unplug the component cables from the VCR (with the PS3 still on!), plug them into the Component input on your TV, and press X. It's a crazy idea, but it's worked for me in the past under different circumstances and it may just force the TV to recognize the signal again. Good luck.
You ROCK!!! Problem is not 100% solved, but your idea sure helped As I mentioned in my OP, I no longer have access to the VCR; however I went ahead and tried some of your steps: 1-Connected PS3 with Composite to the TV 2-Held Power button on PS3 until it made the second beep At this point I got picture on the TV; however I proceeded to try and get component working but couldn't: I could connect the green and red wires (gave me black and white image), but as soon as I connected the blue one it showed "No signal" on the TV (faulty cable? or normal working?) I then tried the PS2 again (which is what I really want to get working) but the original issue remained. Any further ideas? Thanks again!
When the PS3 was outputting black and white, did you have it plugged into the component input on your TV, or was it composite? If you had it plugged into the Component input, and it was working while in Black and White, you could still try to force the resolution into HD and see what happens from there.. Only thing I can think of for the PS2 is... The connector isn't properly interfacing with the PS2's A/V Port. Between my SCPH-39001 and 30001R, I would turn them on sometimes and get no Audio or Video. So I would jiggle the connector. Sometimes doing that would give me sound, and if I was lucky and hit the sweet spot, then I would get video too. Then to keep it in it's 'sweet spot', I would get something small to keep it in place.
Does this Samsung use a breakaway cable for component/composite? I've come across a faulty breakaway cable before that's done similar.
Also try unplugging the tv and re-plugging it before and after resetting image or audio settings on your tv. Also I have a sharp that would occasionally have the sound cut out but would be fixed by hitting the freeze frame button on the remote.
@Eviltaco64 When it was outputting black and white, it was connected with Component (I got color picture when using composite). I tried jiggling the connector of all the cables I have and the issue persists (all cables look ok by the way and they work with the PS3). @jei Yes, unfortunately it does; however I verified it is working ok with the PS3 (Composite) and the PSP (Component). I had thought of this, and even found a replacement, but haven't had time to buy it; however I probably will just to have it in case mine breaks in the future, as it does seem pretty fragile. @sayin999 You mean unplugging the video cable or the power cord? I don't have a freeze frame button in my remote (it's a pretty basic TV to be honest...). I'll be trying my slim PS2 this week and see what's the result (I forgot I had it...). If it works, then I'll be opening my phat PS2 and see if there's any sign of damage in its mobo or something. Once again, thank you everyone for your quick responses and suggestions Keep 'em coming if you think of anything else I can try.
Well, the good new is I finally got everything working. I also know the issue was the PS2 itself... the bad news is I don't know what caused the problem. I got a new component cable and tried it with the PS3: it worked just fine. Tried it with the PS2, still no image or sound. I disassembled the PS2 entirely to see if anything looked burned, bent or broken (I'll post pictures later) but couldn't find anything, so I re-assembled it and decided to try it one more time: it worked just fine.
The PS2, no picture right? Or messed up picture? The color settings might be set wrong (RGB vs YcBcR). Or the circuit may have died. Another possibility is with, component cables for the PS2/PS3, you have to make sure they are in just right. Sometimes they'll be in. But not making the connection. Especially the official ones
Well, I doubt color settings were wrong, as the issue was solved by dissassembling/reassembling the PS2. I guess something may be "dying" somewhere, or maybe something was just "in the wrong place" (ie. a couple of the modchip cables were being pressed against the mobo by the metal shield). Again, the cables were properly inserted, that was the first step in my troubleshooting when I first discovered the issue. And I tried several cables, and jiggling them around to make sure that was not the issue.
