Hello ! What the EXT port on Satellaview ? Which device connects into it ? http://asso.sc.9online.fr/KIF_0241.JPG http://asso.sc.9online.fr/KIF_0242.JPG Thank !
I also thought of the modem too, for send data (because sat only recieve data). But my researchs on the Internet give nothing about EXT port on Satellaview... I notice a hole for a wire or something else. Maybe a MODEM connection or voice (headphone+mic) over Satellaview network ?
it's not like anything hot-swappable could go in there, or anything related to memory/saving. It has to be some I/O. And what I/O has no user interface on a machine like the BS-X? probably a modem or cable/broadband adaptor of sorts. Maybe even a nintendo network kit?
yeah, it was probably meant to host a phone line modem or something, never seen it for sale, though. (there are people claiming to have seen it, but theres no evidence) havent found out yet where exactly its mapped to, but i plan to pick up my satellaview research again eventually. never seen any accesses of the bios or the games to registers that arent already present in the modem, though.
Just skimmed through the manuals and it just references it as a 38 PIN connector. I did some searching on Japanese web pages as well but no dice. There is a carved out path for a cord to fit between the machines. That's the groove you see in the above picture. One goes to the EXT slot and the other end opens up on the back of the machine. That should give you an idea about the size of the cable.
I notice that pin 27 and 28 are audio input. does the EXT-connector have audio throughput ? the dcd-bsa chip inside the base unit claims to contain a "data-channel-decoder" and a pcm decoder.perhaps there was some voice-over/spoken assistance/music while you were connected to the satellite....
I know that some games did have live voice-overs, but I always assumed this was mixed through the A/V switcher as I haven't seen anything that has plugged into that EXT port.
wait a sec, are you talking about the satellaview ext or the sfc ext connector? the snes ext connector and the extra pins on the cartridge connector both have stereo input, yes. the super gameboy uses this for example. and yes, the satellaview modem uses it aswell. there were so-called soundlink games that featured music and voice-overs streamed from the satellite channel. these games were timed, that means you could only play them at a very specific time, usually 18:00-19:00(iirc). bs-zelda for example had timed breaks that halted gameplay for some seconds where someone would give you gameplay hints via the audio stream. the sound effects were generated by the snes. thats why so many satellaview games are frequently paused in-game and dont feature any music. heres a 8 minute or so commercial from the satellaview launch, you can see short snippets of bs zelda and marvelous camp arnold including the sound streaming. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7o4grieJHHA
I've seen hundreds of Satellaviews...literally....but I've never laid eyes on an attachment that goes there. If there was some required plug for the voice novel games I'm sure they'd be a dime a dozen these days. I'm guessing it was for some kind of future expansion that never materialized.
