Does the cart take over from the internal memory when inserted? Or do you always have to save to internal first, and then manually copy thd save to the backup cart? Thanks in advance.
nope, you are given an option to which device you'd like to save. Also, unlike the PlayStation memory card, saving to the Saturn internal memory or cartridge is instant. Yakumo
Lol, poor PlayStation. I need a Saturn backup cart for Panzer Dragoon Saga and a few other RPGs but they're so expensive.. As much as I paid for my recent console.
Thanks very much, I'll look at purchasing one to preserve saves for a bit longer than the silly battery..
Is this also true if you use the Action Reply 3-1 cart? That is, do you get the option to specify which device to save? Or is that true only for the official backup cart?
No, the Action Replay works in a different way. You have to save to the internal memory first and then copy it to the cart using Action Replay's own menu.
A slightly different question (but I hope still related...) I'm no wizz with the Saturn but I have to use an import adaptor to play foreign games. I can't load up, play the game, without the cart in the machine... So how do I put in a memory cart and save? Note; It's been a while but I have since changed the internal batteries in the Saturn. Am I guessing I can just save internally?
You just save it to the internal memory, then switch to your memory cart (of course, after you've turned the Saturn off) and copy it through the menu.
Not all games give you an option to save to cart, though. I know I had a few games like this, but I can't remember which ones. Also, many games saved things like high scores and the like directly to the internal and never game you a choice.
That's an advantage of RAM versus EEPROM or Flash. The advantage PS1 has is your saves last for decades without power which is not the case with Saturn and it's battery powered RAM.
But the saturn memory cart saves instantly as well and the saves last forever just like a PlayStation memory card. I never understood why a Saturn saves instantly while you have to wait (quite long in some games) for a PlayStation to save. It is true that some games will save high scores to the Saturn system memory but as far as i know pretty much all games when saving or on start up will ask which memory you would like to use. The only games I've found that don't ask are the ones that need a memory cartridge to save in the first place such as Dezaemon 2. My Pro Action replay will ack as a memory card BUT it never saves and game data Yakumo
