I remember that Mean Machines in the UK printed some early prototype Saturn hardware shots.

I have a bunch of proto pics in an old Dutch games magazine... but I cant find it atm :smt022

I do believe someone recently posted a pretty large, clear, pic of a Saturn prototype that was made shortly before the design got finalized... it looks a lot like the real thing save for a few cosmetic changes, and I believe it had some text around the CD lid (like the Japanese Megadrive has).

I have a early Saturn pic, where it has silver color, not gray. But the design looks the final...

I know this is a little off topic, but i remember my first saturn i bought (pal) .... it looked like the US version, with slick black buttons at the front and stuff... when i got it home, it didnt boot gamediscs... so i took it back and they swaped it out with a black jap looking one...

does anyone know if they changed the design for the pal version shortly after the release? If not i guess i somehow ended up with a US version!

   )

And that person was me :smt040 Here it is again for all to see. The Sega Saturn's final design before they made it all plain and dull for the release version.

Personally I think that my Silver and Black Saturn mod is better than the final design (Gray model)

Hey, I like your mod. How'd you do it?
I'm probably going to buy another Saturn before moving (in case mine breaks) and would like to make one look cool. I know dick about coloring a system though.

It's really easy. First make sure to give your Saturn a real good clean to get of all the dust and greesy marks. Then it's time to paint. The stuff I used was general matt house spray paint for plastics, metals, wood and glass. I bought it from NAFCO which I'm sure you have in Tokyo. If not then just go to any big DIY shop like Home Wide or Tokyuhands.

When spraying make sure you're in a well ventalated place (I did mine on the varanda :smt043 ) Hold the can about 20 to 30 cm from the Saturn and make light coats using a backwards and forwards motion. Leave it to dry for a few hours in the sun then add another coat of paint. Some say that you should leave the paint to dry for a whole day but I don't thing you have to if you're using the same paint that I used. I'll take a trip to my local NAFCO and find out the name of the paint for you if you'd like.

this is the console i bought shortly after it was out in the UK....
    http://www.silicium.org/images/catalog/consoles/sega/saturn.jpg

and this is the one they quickly replaced it with when I told them it wouldn’t boot pal games...

Also, while we are on the subject of different Saturn’s... what's the US version like?

Comparing the JAP to PAL systems I’ve got, they have different boot screens (logo and sound) and a different sound when you open the drive or its got no game in it... just wondering if its got its own logo and that, as I seem to remember the US games having different artwork on them.

   )

adam-james: That's just the different revisions of the Saturn. The first model (usually with a 20 pin CD cable) has oval power/reset buttons and came with the odd controller that differed from the japanese version, whereas the 2nd model has round power/reset buttons and no CD access light.

As far as I know there's no cosmetic difference between US and PAL saturns.

    Well that's no fun. :D

If it's not too much trouble, that'd be great. Be nice to get a couple of different colored Saturns. They're so cheap, and ugly. :)

How hard do you think it would be to do a mod and keep the logo on the lid??

hard unless u want to get real cose with a real small brush or leave it with a black outline/background. As you would just put tape over the bits you dont spray. (the logos) so if u wanted to have them have the same color background and outline then you would need to get real close wth a real small brush and paint in the background.

Would the two different styles (brush vs. spray) look really different? I guess tape on that would be a lost cause, no?

Well you would spray the console with the tape on the bits u dont want paint on. Then use a very small brush and paint around the black border of the letters and inside the loops of some. So i guess a very steady hand is needed too. At the end of the day i say its more work then making some real real good stickers to put over the spray...

I looked into this when I did my mod as I wanted to keep the WinCE and SEGA logo.

I bought this stuff, you paint it on whatever you are painting on then when you have painted the whole thing this stuff peels off so whatever was underneath it is paint free. Sadly the detail is so fine I couldnt get a brush small enough to get enough on the lettering/logo's for it to work.

So back to square one, eh? A bit of a lost cause.
I guess I should find someone w/ studio that's up to the challenge. :)

I do have a buddy that used to be a designer for Konami of all places, even though he's not into games. Maybe I should bother him.
