The Sega Saturn can output mono and stereo sound, right? Well, when I play the audio tracks of a game I am sure it is being played in stereo. But when I load the game, I noticed that the same audio tracks were being played in mono. I noticed this today while playing Powerslave/Exhumed and Tomb Raider (Euro/Usa). I find this very intriguing because it doesn't happen with all the games, so something must be causing this behaviour. Is my Saturn broken or is this some bug in the games? Could this be intentional by programmers?
No idea what you are doing. EXHUMED and Tomb Raider are in Stereo. Are too sure you haven't got the game options set to mono?
I have configured the Saturn to stereo in system options. Exhumed has a choice between mono and stereo but even if I choose stereo the sound comes out as mono. Tomb Raider has no option so I suppose it relies on the system settings. I will try the games with another console just to check if mine is defective.
I tried exhumed today on a friend's model 2 Saturn and I was shocked to discover the exact same result. This is not possible, completely random model 1 and model 2 with same fault? What the h*** is going on here...? @Yakumo: Please try this on your end just to make sure I am not having hearing problems. Put Exhumed disc in but don't start game (application), instead play audio track 9, for example. Make sure you remember the way it sounded. Now play the game and listen to music of main menu (which is audio track 9). Does it sound the same to you? (Because I am truly convinced it is being played in mono! The wideness and depth of music is gone!) I don't want to be unfair but I think someone at Lobotomy software messed this up.
Okay, I'll try this tonight but I must tell you that my exhumed in the Japanese version. I don't have a PAL or US release.
@Yakumo: Have you managed to try it? Did you come to a conclusion? @anyone else: People, people, has anyone noticed the same?
In that case, I will just have to download japanese version of Exhumed, burn it on CD and play it on the same two saturns as before! I find it hard to belive that Euro or USA version could have the sound output messed up but Japanese version did not. Still, it is possible. Nevertheless, I have already confirmed that sound is being output in mono which is really a shame and puts Euro/ USA version of Exhumed in the sound departament a notch back when compared to the PSX version.
Could've been an issue in programming or an compression issue they didn't kink out till Japanese release. I know f-zero x all music is in mono but is stereo when using 64dd expansion due to limits of cart space.
Big trouble in not so little Japan! Seireki 1999: Pharaoh no Fukkatsu CD image is nowhere to be found...
