I know this problem is common on the SAT's model 1, the flickering lines on the screen that get worse when its reading the disk. My question is: Has anyone actually had this problem solved by replacing the caps or varistors on the Power Supply Board? Has someone pinpointed which one of these components is the one that fails? I bought a Saturn model 1 to replace my model 2 (which by the way, I think the VDP problem is common in that model, I saw another post, i think it was another forum). This "new" Saturn has the flickering lines although it reads the disc quite fine. Can someone help me? I have to say that I'm not quite conviced that caps are actually the ones to blame, I replaced all of the caps in my Game Gear and I still get the flicker on SMS games and the washed out screen, which is very noticeable when the screen has a black background
Every Saturn on my tv behaves oddly when the disk is being read. The screen streches between what looks like 4:3 and widescreen (but only 4:3 size still viewable).
As I've read in older posts, this is a common problem in model 1 and the symptoms clearly indicate that is a power related issue, they always recommend to replace the caps but I've never read about this actually working or another solution that wouldn't involve the caps. Can somebody please help? I don't want to mod my saturn with a PC Power supply.
What kind of video out are you using? I had 2 Model1 Saturns, and never noticed that behaviour on any of them - but then again, I only used RGB connections. For the second one I had no RGB cable, so I put a SCART connector in the battery door and hard-wired it to the main board, had even less interference than using the usual video connector. The picture stretching between 4:3 adn 16:9 could be due to a voltage issue, on a scart connection one pin is being used to make the TV switch to the input where the cable is plugged in, iirc this pin can also be used (with a different voltage) to determine the aspect ratio. Maybe a fluctuating voltage on that pin could drive a TV set crazy.
Correct. This is what I suspect to be the issue. I was going to follow up once I get chance to check the voltage on the pin. Assuming its that, could rewire the console (cut trace, supply steady voltage) or maybe mod the cable. Will be something I will look at eventually. Also, its only on Model 1's - I had a model 2 on the same TV with same lead and everything was fine.
RGB cable I have is the official one (tried 2). Its probably an easy fix. Likely because when the Saturn was around widescreen TV's were not common so it wasnt an issue. Sounds like pin 8 is only getting around 8-9v and when the drive is reading/moving that is dropping to the widescreen range (4.5v-7v). Should be simple to fix with a mod to the console (so you dont need to fix every replacement rgb cable)
I'm glad that this thread helped European users with a problem with their SCART cable, whatever that is. Still, my problem wasn't solved. I live in North America and we used NTSC with composite video, my TV screen doesn't change aspect ratio, it has some wavy lines that have a white hue, these go up to down above the image (no, it's not VSYNC), when the disc drive starts to read data, they get worse, the game goes on well but it's annoying. Anybody out there have fixed this problem replacing components on the PSU? Which ones are responsible for the problem? Anybody in the US, Canada, Mexico or Japan?
The components might vary between individual instances, I can crack open one of my model 2s later to trace out the 5v rail circuitry. I'd imagine there are only a handful of components that couldbe at fault and fewer that fail more readily than others.
